Lightning Strike Collapses Walkway Canopy on CTA Blue Line |
|
Posted by Alan Follett on Sun Jul 24 22:29:34 2016 At about 7:00 PM this evening, an apparent lightning strike collapsed the canopy of the ramp leading to the east end of the Medical District station on the Blue Line. Debris is blocking one track, requiring single-tracking between Pulaski and LaSalle. No injuries are reported. In a separate storm-related incident, the Brown Line was blocked by a fallen tree between Armitage and Sedgwick. https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160724/near-west-side/blue-line-suspended-after-lightning-strikes-platform-fire-officials' |

About that lightning strike video. After the bolt of lightning struck the canopy, why all of the continued arcing, did the canopy hit the third rail ? Bill Newkirk |

A photo on the WGN-TV site shows a section of canopy in contact with the third rail on the eastbound track during cleanup operations.Normal service resumed this morning. Alan Follett Hercules, CA |

The continued light show would would say otherwise. Bill Newkirk |

Same way it works in the overhead line power industry. The feeder cable is the fuse. Once it melts, power goes off. :) |

Supposedly, feeders are supposed to be of greater ampacity than the CBs. That said, the videos are pretty. Glad no one was hurt. |

But in electric power distribution, the secondaries are intended to be the fuse. :)It's a different world as you would expect with DC. |

I was out to the Illinois Medical District station this morning (I'm in Chicago at the moment, though I disclaim any responsibility for the storm). All debris cleared, and normal rail operations restored. However, a few hundred feet of the east pedestrian ramp, which passes under the Pink Line, are reduced to bare concrete, obviously unsuitable for passenger use.Alan Follett Hercules, CA |
