I wonder how many R-9s were sent to the BMT eastern division after the standards were retired. How many were re-painted & when the order came down to stop the re-painting.
That info is out there somewhere. Just don't know where to look or know of anyone still around that would know.
Just curious.

Based on my personal observation and photo documentation, There were 400 R-7s through R-9s transferred to the BMT Eastern. I believe there were also a couple of R-4s that were renumbered in with the higher numbers and transferred there as well. That makes approximately 400 cars sent to the BMT East.

I seem to recall from when I was working that the Rockwell truck itself was not a defective design but that what passes for planners and engineers in NYCTA New Car Engineering. failed to specify that the truck had to be able to handle the G forces on the NYCTS and specified a truck that was too weak for NY’s infrastructure.

The R46, as well as the R44, did have their share of problems when they had "P Wire" and of course add the truck problems with the 46. But once the trucks were replaced and both classes were mechanically rebuilt into SMEE's, their reliability increased greatly.

SEPTA needs to shut down both the Chestnut hill lines and the Fox Chase line. There's ample city transit in those areas to pick up the slack. Maybe even consider shutting down the Media-Elwyn line since the route 101 and 102 trolleys serve the same catchment area. Also, close the Trenton line stops from 30th to Torresdale.

"Lease agreements almost signed and ready for:

Amtrak
2x ACS64
5x Amfleets

NJT
1x ALP-44
8x Comet cars

MARC
5x passenger cars

New schedule starts July 11th (Monday):
Trenton Line - removing 12 SL-IV and putting 1x NJT and 1x MARC consist (+300 seats)
Trenton/Cornwells/Levittown platforms are being extended with pavement
Warminster line - additional local service between Center City/Glenside (+1440 seats)
Paoli/Thorndale - 3x quick turns between Bryn Mawr using Amfleet equipment
Lansdale/Doylestown - Additional early AM train(s)

Looking at express bus routes from high traffic stations to Center City
Not done leasing equipment - additional equipment possible from Amtrak and other agencies from across country
DNC likely not to affect railroad scheduling/passenger counts

240 trucks total = 37 have no cracks
480 beams total = 264 have cracks
Repair is not likely possible given magnitude of problem, not entirely ruled out (SEPTA and Rotem both came to this conclusion)
If repair is out of questions, Rotem has already sourced steel for new parts.
Trucks are under warranty

Service disruption will likely last through August, at minimum."
