Wow, I didn't know you could see the ESB all the way from the Dyre Ave Line. I know on a clear sunny day you can see the towers of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge all the way from 121st Street station (well, just east of it, where the J/Z trains comes out of the tunnel portal and onto the El)
Great pictures btw. I miss the Redbirds though - the R142/142A's just does not compare.

Ah yes, my scan of the 1972 map lives on :).

A poster printed copy of this lived on my wall for 5 years, until it faded too badly. Sadly, I lost the original resolution scan so I can't recreate the poster... this is actually 1/4th my original scan size.

I have a 1967 "Chrystie 1.0" map showing the NX, RJ, and JJ.

I got it from my mom when I was about 9 or 10 (so was the map)...I saw it laying around the house, pointed out to my mom that it was outdated, and asked if I could have it. She casually said "yeah, sure". All these years, including 2 marriages, I still have it.

This date lives in infamy in Chicago's history. For it was on May 25, 1950 that Green Hornet 7078 went through an open switch at 62nd Place and State Street and slammed into a gasoline truck, setting off a massive fireball. 33 people were killed including the motorman and gasoline truck driver. The car itself was torched, leaving a warped metal shell. Despite this, it served as a parts donor for sister car 7205, which had wrapped itself around a lamppost at State and Root almost a year earlier. I often wondered what parts could have possibly been reused, given the extent of damage to 7078. Since 7205's frame was bent, it's possible that 7078's frame may have been salvaged. Last summer at IRM, I bought an excellent book about Chicago's PCC streetcars, part of a series of books titled, Chicago's Streetcar Pictorial. This book is LOADED with color photos of Blue Geese and Green Hornets; it's broken down route by route that operated PCCs. There are several photos of 7205 after it had been rebuilt, one dating from 1951.

The disastrous collision with the gasoline truck is mentioned. Interestingly it talks about something that is not covered in the book, The Green Hornet Streetcar Disaster. Supposedly the ill-fated motorman was told during the course of that run that he'd be going straight through at State and 63rd. For those of you who are familiar with that area (it's just north of the Skyway entrance), there is a railroad underpass that both State and 63rd descend to. On that date in 1950, a heavy rainstorm flooded the underpass and as a result, Broadway-State streetcars were turned at 62nd Place. A pump crew was dispatched to pump out the water and they were almost finished when 7078 came hurtling down State St. Little did the motorman know that the switch to the turnaround loop was plugged open. A flagman frantically tried to the motorman's attention to slow down, but for whatever reason the car kept right on going and hit the open switch at a high rate of speed.

My aunt remembers coming home from work that evening and being told by my grandmother about that accident.

While I might be able to find the map again, the effort of scanning it and stitching the thing together would be too annoying. The first time took quite a few hours. Also I like that the few flaws in it (such as the J between Sutphin & 160th and the one visible on crosstown lines from cell C3 to E3) are sortof a watermark.

Nice photos!!
Thanks for posting.
Your pictures of the stations in tunnel really captures the atmosphere of them.

I explored the remains of the Wakygil (sp?) station up in Mt. Vernon, years back. Remains of both platforms were beneath the underpass only. Trackbeds unfortunately filled with garbage. Stairways to the former station building were blocked off. Just north of the under pass was a large, depressed grassy area - the remains of the former ROW.

It wss maybe a couple of hundred feet in length, ending at private property - the yards of various suburban houses.

Above is as well as I can remember. There are photos of these remains but I don't remember which webpage.

That's the one. I kept as pristine as possible. It does have a few of my dad's doodlings on it, but that was before it was mine.

I also have a 1963 one showing the IND, BMT, and IRT in division colors and the "future site" of the World's Fair indicated, as well as the location of Freedomland. It has a very modern, styled drawing of an elevated station on the cover. On the back, it has a brief history of the subway, and a picture of the then brand-new R29 #8676. I spent years looking for that car- I finally spotted it in 1995 on the 6. I think it retired from that route.

I got that one the same way- my mom had it laying around and let me have it- ironically several years after I got the 1967 one.

It was also comparing the 1963 and 1967 ones that I figured out about the Chrystie St. connection- remember, I wasn't old enough to remember it (mom was 3 months pregnant with me on 11/26/67), and there was no internet to look it up on.

But I could see the appearance of the Grand Street station, and when looking at my 1972 maps, the appearance of 57th/6th and 148/Lenox as well. Interestingly, I did NOT notice the Nassau Loop service that existed. Until I read about it online, I assumed that the Broadway BMT always ran on the south side of the Manny B and that the north side tracks had sat unused from the time the bridge was built until sometime in the 1960s.

Familiar images, as Morris Park is my home station. But nicely done.

I was thinking that May 25 was the anniversary of the NYWB's original opening in 1912, and that was why you took those pictures on that date. But I double-checked and the anniversary is actually May 29, which is today. So happy 104th birthday to the Dyre Ave. line, formerly the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway. Too bad it is closed today.
