The phone is pumping out the same RFID signal that the credit card pumps out. So it's the same technology on both ends. It's just that the phone selectively pumps out the RFID signal whereas the credit card is always broadcasting (or rather it's always listening for a prompt to broadcast - not sure which one it is offhand)

Not everyone who uses public transit has plastic and Smartphones.
But almost everyone SHOULD have the former. That they don't is a deficiency on their part.

I am not burning up data charges to buy a sandwich at Starbucks, add money to my MC, or show a conductor my virtual ticket.
As SP said, you don't need to use data to make a mobile payment. That said, if you are running low on data, there are free cellphone plans (well, after a $29 one-time fee) that give you up to 4GB of free data per month. It's practically free. 4GB would allow you to do a lot of adding money to your MC. Buying a sandwich at Starbucks and showing a C/R your virtual ticket could still be done without using any data.

Pretty sure RFID devices only broadcast when prompted. Their batteries would go dead soon otherwise. My EZ-Pass (similar technology) and my company ID card have been going strong for years.

The way I understood it is that they broadcast a VERY weak signal and thus use minimal power. Which may still be true. But you are saying that they only broadcast that very weak signal when promoted. Makes sense. That's why I mentioned it as a possibility in my original post. It was somewhere in my brain.

They can be either way depending on what you are trying top accomplish

Radio-frequency identification

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically stored information. Passive tags collect energy from a nearby RFID reader's interrogating radio waves. Active tags have a local power source such as a battery and may operate at hundreds of meters from the RFID reader.

If you're using a chip-and-pin machine you need to use a debit card... almost no US credit cards have the type of PIN needed for those machines. Ironically, the reason for this is the confusion you alluded to: we are used to PIN = cash/debit transaction, no PIN = credit. In Canada PIN can be used for all transactions, the machine allows you to select credit or debit if it is not a credit-only card.

That said I generally just use cash to add money to my Opus card... in Sydney it was worse. The machines to add to cards required pin and accepted no cash. I ended up having to go to the local 7-11 just to use cash (until I learned I could use my debit card).

Yes...several times. Told them the bill got lost in the mail (truth..got whacked with a late fee too)'
The reply was I should have taken their advantage of their on line banking services.
Therefore, "I don't qualify for a rate reduction at this time"...a direct quote from a live customer service rep.

I'd have had a few problems with other banks spanning several years & they always responded favorably to my phone call by waiving the penalty & not raising the interest to usurious rates.

HSBC used to be a credit card issuer. Back when it was Buffalo-based Marine Midland, it was a nice bank. But HSBC eventually got the worse customer ratings than Capital One, the 2nd worse on the scale I saw, and that takes some effort.

I was once 20 cents short of a full CC payment. They charged me whatever interest rate it was on the entire balance, 30 days worth, which was about $6. I called them to take it off, but they would not. I told them I will shut down the account if they do not. They would not budge.

I wrote a poison later to cancel the account. Then they took the charge off, but did not close the account. I never used it again. They shut the account down after a year of no use.

You cannot require people to have a bank account to use public transit.
"Deficiency" is your subjective opinion.

I never used debit cards as such, only as ATM cards to take out cash, which is not often.

I have known of (not directly) of people who had a savings account, and used money orders in lieu of checks.

I don't particularly care if my credit card is stolen. The card is cancelled, they mail a new one and credit the fraudulent charges. As opposed to cash. Or an ordinary farecard.

As for phones, I "wave" my phone around the subway all the time. It is not more likely to be stolen near a turnstile. Finally, while cell phone thefts are a thing, you do seem to be stuck in the 70s with regard to crime, so I don't intend to take your advice on crime prevention.

New credit cards take a week to come in the mail. Then any auto payments you have connected to that card have to be changed, hotels rooms you have reserved with that card should be changed to a new card. I'd rather lose $5 on a replacement fare card.

As for Smartphones, you of all people - you have your whole life on that damned phone - your finances, alarm clock, radio, e-mail ID's.

Yes, in 2016, it can be snatched - easily. When waving them around turnstiles comes with new fare collection, they will become a big target in that area.

When I recently lost my Amex in Jamaica, NY, they fedexed the replacement.

I would rather not. Those things you describe are trivial to fix and cost less than $5.

I have more than one credit card. So during those few days, I used a different one.

Every single one of those things you described are synced/backed up. I would lose hundreds of dollars replacing the phone, but I would not lose a single piece of important data.

Regardless, my point stands about taking my phone out at the turnstile not increasing the chance of theft by any useful measure. Finally, I wouldn't take out my phone at all; I have a smartwatch.

Why not? Maybe we should? Because all adults should have a bank account if they want a chance of being successful in life. So why not use public transit to force them to get a bank account?

I never used debit cards as such, only as ATM cards to take out cash, which is not often.
Same here. But that's because I have credit cards to use for purchases. For people with such poor credit/finances that they can't get a non-predatory credit card and thus only have the debit/ATM card that comes with a checking account, what's wrong with using that card for their transit purchases?

That's what I'm finding, you insert the chip end of our card into a slot in the credit card reader, then wait until it says , card read or transaction processed or something., then you remove it and you're finished with your transaction.

That also seems to be procedure from many of the Chase Bank ATM machines, whereas before one could remove their card before the transaction was complete, one now has to wait until the receipt is printed.
