MVM credit card difficulties

Posted by gbs on Sat Apr 30 00:52:55 2016

For two days I was unable to add time to my Metrocard using my credit card, at different MVMs at different stations. I would begin the transaction, dip the card, enter my zip code, get the "processing" message, and then be told Sorry, the request could not be completed.

After the second day, I called my credit card company to see if there was a problem with my card. The agent said everything was fine, and didn't even see any attempts that were declined, so it looks like the MVM never asked for approval.

Today, the third day, it worked on the first try. Can anyone explain what might have happened? Had I needed the transaction the first day, I would have been out of luck.

Maybe a network issue (hardware or software) between the MTA and the credit card companies?

There could have been communications issues involving the machines you used. Past experience has shown me that sometimes the keypad where you enter your zip code can get flaky and the number you put in is not what the machine sees.

There could be any number of reasons.

I guess no Canadian, or any other foreign, visitor can buy MC (or NJT)transportation unless it is with cash - no zip code.

From the MTA Website

When a credit card is used at an MVM, the MVM will ask you to enter your zip code for verification. However, if your credit card account has a billing address outside of the United States, you are not subject to the zip code verification requirement. Instead, type in “99999” when prompted for a zip code. This will indicate to the MVM that an international credit card is being used, and the regular transaction authorization process will still take place.

Bonus: US ones don't work in the Netherlands. Thankfully, NS's staff at Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal, are very useful. The ticket machines? Not so much. I suspect they're German - they just say 'technical error' when you try a US chip card in them.

Oddly, ISTR having no issues in Munich...

I have Chase Mastercard that has no foreign transaction fees, so I use it for Canada. I specifically asked them for a replacement card with a chip in case they use them more universally than here.

BTW, forget about using Discover Card if you go to Canada. I have yet to find a place that takes it, even in touristy Montreal with lots of Americans. VIA Rail won't take it.

Why?

Before you answer, one issue (which is solved with mobile payment) is that the cards can be read remotely by someone standing next to you holding or wearing the appropriate equipment. It makes stealing credit cards a cinch.

I wish RFID readers were more common and I wish CVS would fucking turn theirs back on!

The issue is that the device will not transmit your card information without action on your part. With  Pay, for example, you have to have your finger on the button for it to work.

But doesn't the request for acceptance/decline include transmission of the zip code? If an incorrect zip code is put in I would think the card would be formally declined, not just have the transaction incomplete. I would think the MVM has to ask the bank/card company what the right zip code is. But I could be wrong.

But isn't that a different technology? Doesn't mobile payments require a smart phone, whereas RFID is something that looks more or less like a credit card but has the tiny radio transmitter instead of a magnetic stripe?

(I have a credit card-like object with my picture on it that allows me to walk into my office building. I believe that's RFID.)

No. When Apple Pay was released in October 2014, it was immediately compatible with every RFID credit card reader in the country. This caused a problem with CurrentC participants CVS and Rite Aid who turned off their RFID readers in response. Rite Aid has since turned them back on.

Another problem I encounter in Montreal is adding AMT train trips to my OPUS card. If done with a credit card, it wants a PIN number. Most of credit cards don't have PIN numbers, or I never use them. Then what ? Will it charge it as a cash withdrawal with interest kicking in immediately ?

Minority and irrelevant. I don't think so.

I am not burning up data charges to buy a sandwich at Starbucks, add money to my MC, or show a conductor my virtual ticket. I don't see many people doing that on the commuter trains either.

MTA will still find it necessary to produce a Smartcard for those who will not wave around their cards or phones around near turnstiles to get through. That blows your irrelevant case.

You are correct. If the wrong zip code is entered (or the keypad is messed up so it doesn't register properly), then the transaction won't go thru.

I have always thought that the zip code may be encoded on the magnetic strip but it may not be.
