Late evening problems continue with R to Bay Ridge (on weekends) |
|
Posted by BrooklynTrain on Sun Feb 7 00:12:25 2016 Just about every weekend, the wait for a Bay Ridge R train at 59th/4th is 30 to 45 minutes between 10pm and 12midnight. (After midnight, we get a service increase, since shuttle trains run every 20 minutes as opposed to 30 to 45 minutes for the full-route R train.) Happened again tonight: there were FOUR N trains before an R train finally appeared at 11:31pm towards Bay Ridge at 59th/4th. Of course, hundreds of people packed the platform (but many more were leaving to walk home after each N train pulled in, and/or in between the waits for N trains.)Problem is twofold: Less trains on the R in general (compared to Q, N and D - obviously no Q in Manhattan this weekend), and many R trains drop out at Whitehall. Do they need to start running the R shuttle at 9pm towards Bay Ridge? At least then we'll "only" have a 20 minute shuttle wait, compared to the 40 minute wait we have every weekend right now. Or if the J doesn't have trackwork, perhaps run the J to Bay Ridge instead on weekends. |

This is one of the things my idea of a new (Z) being a 24/7 line running the old "Bankers Special" route fixing. The (Z) can in this case cover for lack of (R) service late since it would run at all times to Manhattan (and extended late nights and weekends to Metropolitan) and end this problem. |

Judging from the schedule, that sounds like 2 out of every 3, or 3 out of every 4 are dropping out. Exactly what is causing the R to do this? Trains are failing? Lousy dispatching? Otherwise, I agree they should start the shuttle much earlier, at the expense of D and N express service. |

If this occurrence is happening on a regular basis, I'd pull out my camera / video recorder setup - with the included running date / time stamp and record the crowds on the platform and the waiting times, and the other trains coming and going. Include video commentary from the riders that are also waiting for the R-train. Then I'd send this video each night to the regular news and cable news stations, and other news media - EVERY NIGHT of this regular occurrence.Build up the anticipation of these videos - that basically says "yes, the R-train is screwing up". There will be a response from the MTA because the video evidence is there, that backs up the claims. This kind of evidence also gets the political folk on your side, etc. Again - all of this to improve the service on the R-train, which is something that can be done. The MTA has the money, the manpower, the equipment - it just needs the will power. The will-power has to be provided by involving others in this cause. Mike |

If it's every night at the same time, possibly there's just a glitch in the schedule that needs to be fixed, with one or two more R trains that shouldn't be turned at Whitehall. |

Specifically, it looks like the 10:22 from Forest Hills is getting dropped or turned at Whitehall when the schedule calls for it to run to Bay Ridge, thus leaving nothing between the 10:01 and the 10:42.Link |

This is why a new storage yard south of 95th St under 4th Av is really needed, this would avoid having R trains being stored on the southbound express tracks between 36th St and 95th St and using either the 38th St or Coney Island rail yards. |

From a previous message:"If it's every night at the same time, possibly there's just a glitch in the schedule that needs to be fixed, with one or two more R trains that shouldn't be turned at Whitehall." Let's say that you are perfectly correct. (I have no information that contradicts what you're saying, nor I am trying in any way to contradict your point.) Again, let's say that you are perfectly correct. The point is how to bring the long wait times to the attention of the MTA, and to get the problem resolved that benefits the riders. I simply suggested one means of getting attention to the problem. Let the MTA fix their problem! Whether it is a time schedule change, or keeping certain trains in service, etc. Bring attention to the problem, and the affect the problem is having on the riders! Just my thoughts. Mike |

In fairness, virtually every weekend they run a supplement schedules, many times different each weekend, not on the MTA website, which usually extends headways. The regular schedule, late PM on Sat./Sun., has a bit of time where every other train turns at Whitehall. |

When those trains go back to Queens, 95 is running an extended headway where these trains shorten the gap when they go back north from Whitehall. I no longer have home access to supplement schedules. I only have MTA.info for regular schedules like you guys. |

I checked the posted evening schedule on www.mta.info, and the gap shouldn't be that long, about 15-20 mins max. They take out every other R train for a period of time, but they're also assuming that the following R trains will get to 95 St faster than the previous ones which would narrow the gaps. What if that's not true, that late evening traffic is heavier than earlier evening traffic? Maybe that's what's causing the delays? |

I would say that as long as they can't keep up 20 minute intervals, the shuttle should start running and the N should begin using the tunnel.Or if this is cost-prohibitve, then for the time period in question, have every R end at Whitehall, use the savings on that to beef up N service slightly to every 10 minutes and run alternating Ns to 95th, preferably through the tunnel. In this case, the costs would be relatively neutral. Passengers would just need to be informed. |

Thanks for the info. Still, maybe they should cut the R riders some slack, since this seems to be going on nearly every weekday and weekend. Start the shuttle earlier, even if it means ending D and N express service earlier. Bay Ridge is as hot a neighborhood as Ridgewood or Williamsburgh. |

And as I said elsewhere if you run the N through the tunnel as well then you can turn 100% of R trains at Whitehall if you want during that time.If you have a well-timed (or guaranteed) connection between the N and R at 59th you're all set. |
