What does the G train have to do with it ? It is nowhere near for most of the route. Sounds like an equivalent of HBLRT. Worth considering.

The G doesn't run by the waterfront.

That said, anything de Blasio "proposes" ought to be summarily ignored.

What does the G train have to do with it ?

It's being presented as a method of getting from Brooklyn to Queens. We already have one underutilized method.

“There is a desperate need for north-south transportation between Brooklyn and Queens,” said Mitchell L. Moss, director of the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy at New York University. “This is going to do more to encourage more housing than any other transit improvement currently underway.”

Speaking of holding up traffic: the Pulaski Bridge. IDK where the regular traffic is supposed to go, + the B32 & B62 buses, although this would kill the B32. They took away a lane for bikes, now 2 more for "Light Rail".

Streetcars sound like an ancient concept.

The de Blasio streetcars would travel about 12 miles per hour, with a trip between Greenpoint and Dumbo in Brooklyn lasting around 27 minutes, less than current routes on buses and subways.

The average riding time for Citibike from Greenpoint to Dumbo is 26.8 minutes with a standard deviation of 4.75 minutes.

I'm not sure why this is such a recurring theme around here whenever bicycling is mentioned. I've never thought it was a big deal. In the middle of August you might sweat on a bike, but you'd sweat standing at a bus stop or walking to or from your destination anyway. It's not like you're going to ride a Citibike as though you're in the Tour de France, and if you're biking then there's almost always a breeze to keep you at least slightly cool.

The streetcar system, which would realize a long-held fantasy of the city’s urban planners, is expected to cost about $2.5 billion, significantly less than a new underground subway line, city officials said on Wednesday. . . .
Groan. Only because $156 million per mile (that's 56 percent higher than the average per-mile cost of HBLR) is less than $400 million per mile (which used to get you a four-track main line in the past).

This would make the project the most expensive streetcar in the nation in terms of capital cost. (Portland Streetcar and similar projects work out to about $10 million per mile.)

New York City ain't rural Pennsylvania, or Central Mootown ... construction requires working around a LOT of other infrastructure and other high costs. New York City ain't Portland either. Laying track through nowhere is cheap. Building around an already existing place is expensive. The price, given the mileage is chickenfeed. Try digging a subway, or building a steam locomotive bridge over the Hudson and cost it up.

As a cyclist and citi-cyclist, I can tell you that there is a big difference between standing around on a hot steamy day, and riding a bike on a hot steamy day, and an even bigger difference when it isn't hot and steamy. You WILL get sweaty. That breeze does nothing to keep you cool as the work you expend to create that breeze far exceeds the breeze's ability to cool you.

The effort to ride a citibike is even greater than a regular bike. I'd rather be riding my carbon fiber road bike up a mountain than riding a citibike on a level street. And fugheddaboud riding a citibike uphill. Every rise and fall of the street feels like Mt Everest.

They can't get you north/south along the waterfront.

They can't get you north/south along the Manhattan waterfront either.

You go in from the waterfront a few blocks, hop on the subway, and when you get out you head back to the waterfront.

There can't possibly be transit from every location to every location. The East River eastern shore strikes me as a very low priority place to put new transit.
