I believe that other than wishing, hoping and dreaming - NO real official information has been given out.I seems very logical that the W-train would be revived in some form, and a few suggestions of train service re-arrangements have been posted and proposed. Right now, all we can do is "wait and see". All we can say for certain is that the Q-train will be extended up the Second Avenue stub-way. Mike |

SI93, et al. If you live in or near the city, why not stopinto the 2nd Av Subway field office / info center on 2nd at about 84-85th street. They have good hand out info and lots of videos and models to gawk at.The info may be prelim. as the MTA can change its plans. |

LION does not think so.NOBODY will use the 2nd Avenue subway unless service is just as good as on Lexington. Lazy Service is NO SERVICE. (Q) + (N) to Second Avenue (63rd Street - Bridge Routes) (R) + (W) Broadway Local (60th Street - Tunnel Route) (W) Trains should terminate at 9th Avenue / 36th Street (Lower Lever) so that switching will not interfere with following trains as had happened at Whitehall Street. Perhaps outside of Rush Hour such trains can terminate at Whitehall if schedules allow. When the (N) train is not running, the (W) can cover the Sea Beach line. ROAR |

N train needs to be a full time service via the Sea Beach. Q service by itself will certainly draw passengers away from Lex since an empty 600 ft train would definitely be preferable to a packed 510 ft train coming from the Bronx even at slightly longer headways then Lex. |

I understand that demographics have changed over the years, however, immediately post Chrystie, the Astoria branch was served only by the RR and with 8 car trains of 60 footers. I can’t see the need for another complete service to go to Astoria when a slight increase in service on the N should suffice to handle the number of passengers coming from Astoria and LIC. |

The average headway would seem to be between 2 and 3 minutes, meaning between 20 and 30 tph. How do you figure 40?Headways depend on two things: the ability of the signals/dwell times to handle the headways and operating trains to meet the headway. The first can be tested by operating trains at various headways. This will establish a minimum headway. Did you notice any 90 second headways? There were 5 such examples. The merge is at 11th St in Queens. If the tunnel signals could not handle 90 second headways, their arrival at Lex/59th would not show a 90 second headway. |

A merge should take around 60 seconds. The train is moving at 10 mph (15 fps). It will travel 900 feet in that time. That allows for 600 feet of train length and 300 feet of interlock. |

Yeah, but there's also clearing the signals, releasing and getting up to speed following your new leader so two minutes is more realistic. |

Problem with interlocking levers though is that if they sit there unmoved for very long and then you need to pull them, they're stuck. :) |

Sorry, I meant add more trains per hour than those that would remain in the 60th street tunnel once the Q doesn't go there. I did not mean add more maximum possible trains per hour to the tunnel. |

Did you mean six examples?Yes. If the signal system will allow such train headways, it would allow such headways continuously if the trains were supplied. did you type this up or was this from the MTA GTFS data? It's from the MTA GTFS data, untouched by my human hands. |

IME, a salaried software developer who consistently misses deadlines risks being called out for it in year-end reviews and a concomitant lower-than-hoped-for raise and/or bonus. A freelancer doing the same risks losing clients. |

Would you explain the 300 feet of interlock part? That's the distance between signals on either side of the switch. It's usually a little shorter. I've approximated this distance 3 ways. I've looked at the chaining marking on the signals. I've seen trains on the switch and used the car lengths between the signals as measurement units. I've also viewed outdoor switches on Google Maps satellite view and used their measuring tool. |

Thanks to Wall Street and lazy coders, Von Neumann's Law has been rescinded. Thanks to the new "continual improvement process", software is now delivered by the deadline at all times. If it's broken, we'll apply another bandaid to it next month which will introduce new bugs and break the previous version.Delivery, no problem. Working? LOL! |

Great post! I fully agree! This would certainly draw passengers from the LEX. There needs to be an actual passenger connection between Lex/59 and Lex/63. |

From a previous message:"I can’t see the need for another complete service to go to Astoria when a slight increase in service on the N should suffice to handle the number of passengers coming from Astoria and LIC." I know that in the past I've recommended that the W-train be revived serving Astoria as a full-time local with Q & N trains serving the Second Avenue segment. I know that other folks have suggested other arrangements. I also know that regardless of what-ever has been suggested in the past, what-ever seems "logical", or how ever "necessary" an idea appears based upon our thinking about the topic - that the MTA will make up their own minds and do what-ever they are going to do. Unless, I'm very wrong - I believe that the MTA has decided that the Q-train will travel along Second Avenue, and that anything related to a possible revival of a W-train route has not been confirmed as of yet by the MTA. The MTA, again, will do what ever it is that they will want to do. We are mere spectators along for the ride, and in control of nothing. Mike |
