Instead, I would call them "criminals, with a predilection towards harming the subway".They may have an intimate knowledge of the subway, but if they truly loved it the way most of us do, they would treat it with reverence. This is (albeit at a lower scale of evil) like raping a woman and calling it a "date". Yes, you know the mechanical aspects- but you have no love in your heart. |

That's not how analogies work. Trespassing on a lay-up is to railfanning as rape is to dating in that in both pairs, the former is a crime crudely masquerading as the latter by way of sharing a few mechanical aspects while being completely different in all meaningful respects. That is, these people may say they like trains but they actually enjoy breaking trains in much the same way that a rapist may say he loves his victim(s) but actually enjoys hurting them. |

One train is happy that you were sensitive enough to take its picture and maybe lift some of its historically most important parts, the other unhappy that you broke in and changed a roll sign. Only trains don't have emotions nor do they provide consent.There are a lot of risky and legally questionable things about this hobby when looked at from the outside. I'd bet that you and everyone else on this board has trespassed on more than one occasion often despite knowing that you were in fact trespassing. Most have also climbed on equipment, maybe snuck into a cab or two. I and several other people I know operated trains, passenger and freight, as a teenager - sometimes with people on board but with the ok from a friendly employee. I know railfans who wrote graffiti, others who went down into the tunnels to explore. They all wanted to be around trains in one form or fashion and now all of them are in the rail industry. I'm not questioning anyone's motivation. You on the other hand seem to know that the motivation of these kids is to 'hurt' trains. How do you know this? You disagree with their actions, ok, say that you disagree but don't make presumptions about motivations. |
