I managed to acquire an unlimited for today's railfanning. Any ideas + suggestions?

I'm already going to Mattapan so no need to mention that.

Go somewhere else? See if you can barter with Amtrak passengers to get passage away from the blasted hellscape we so euphemistically call "Boston"?

I particularly like the C and D on the green line. Reservoir to Cleveland Circle is not a long walk if you want to ride one in and the other out.

Check out Bowdoin and Lechmere loops as they aren't going to be around much longer.

Besides that? Depends on what you are looking for. The Red line bridge over the Charles is pretty spectacular. The silver line to the Airport is interesting to say the least, even if it is far from the ideal of transit in my mind.

Made it to Bowdoin, but green lines weren't in the cards today.

What's happening to the loop? They didn't let me ride it.

I’m not sure, but I believe there is a project to extend the Blue Line farther west into Lechmere so the loop will eventually not be needed except for selected short turns.

That's on the Green line. The Bowdoin loop is on the Blue line, and the plan is to close the station permanently once the Government Center rebuild is complete, as they're quite close.

Wow. 40 years ago I was pissed that the Blue Line and Red Lines didn't intersect. Glad I didn't sit around and wait for it.

You can ride MBTA ferries, too, if you get tired of railfanning :)

You can get some good shots of the Lechmere line from Science Park and along the walk between it and Lechmere. Others have steered you in the right direction...and yeah, blah blah Mattapan.

your pal,
Fred

The Charles-MGH extension has been planned for a long time. Will the Gov't. Center rebuild include entrances on Charles St. that are closer to Bowdoin's location, to warrent its closure?

Having lived in Boston, & walked between Gov't. Center and Bowdoin, I know how near to each other they are. But, it will be too bad if they do close Bowdoin, because though close to Gov't. Center, I would think there's enough of a daily population density quite close to this station (phone company, Lindemann Ctr., City Hall etc.) to keep it open, at least during the day/rush hours.

That way, the entering rush hour crowds would not all be funneled to Gov't Center, with the pop. further north having access to Bowdoin.

Do you know if the MBTA has researched daily passenger use of Bowdoin and found the entering numbers are quite low, even during rush hour?

The Red line bridge over the Charles is pretty spectacular.

I have pics from the platform at Charles because I walked there from Bowdoin but it was after dark and I was in a bit of a rush so no pics from the bridge itself.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the details. I just remember reading that they planned to close Bowdoin but were delaying the closure until the Government Center rebuild was completed. I don't have anything more than that.

Sorry for bringing up a somewhat old thread, but I will be spending a couple of weekdays in Boston soon and wonder the following:

-Is the Red Line to Braintree worth it or should I skip? (In any case, I will go to Ashmont and change to go to Mattapan). The nycsubway.org description makes it look attractive and different but if I'll be getting the flavors of it the whole way I'd prefer to save some time.

-If I do branches C and D of the Green Line am I missing much by leaving out B and E?

-Besides the above, and the Red Line bridge over the Charles, is there anything that's can't-miss from a transit-fan perspective (incl. all forms of transit and surrounding scenery) that you can think of? Any terminal extremities specifically worth the trek to get there (e.g. Oak Grove, etc.?)

Thanks.
