MTA Asking Help in Identifying Stations With Any Name Associated With Water |
|
Posted by heypaul on Thu Oct 1 18:59:19 2015 We need to compile a list of subway station names that have any association with water, as these stations would be most vulnerable should the hurricane impact our area. |

"34 Street Hudson"Absolutely, a disaster waiting to happen. I think that when that cavern over 120 feet below sea level fills with water, it will cause Madhatter Island to float away. |

I didn't even think of Ocean Parkway and I'm just two stops away. This station is high risk and I recommend they raise the sructure an additional 10 feet for safety sake. |

Speaking of photos my Sub Chat pal Marty Siegel referred me to a story of those run down stations on the Sea Beach. Run down, hell!!!! They looked like they were victims of an air raid. The concrete was coming apart, there were leaks all over the platforms and this was the case in all the stations past Fort Hamilton Parkway. Who the hell is sleeping at the switch. I've been hearing that work is going to be done to revamp those stations but from the looks of things this might be a decade battle. Why the ef did the TA wait so long to make these repairs. It's s f#$%&@g disgrace what has happened to my favorite line.I remember as a kid back in the late 40's and early 50's those stations were immaculate and the sign designating the stop were bright, clear and clean. Fact is, that story really pissed me off. |

Fred.... The problem wiith the Sea Beach line is that the original construction plans called for the use of cut and cover construction methods. After they cut an 80 foot deep trench through the right of way, the BMT ran out of money and was unable to put a cover over the trench, which would have kept the stations in pristine condition. My proposal is to elevate the entire right of way about 100 feet within its current foot print, which would protect the line from future storms. If we start construction tomorrow, we could have the entire line elevated way before Brooklyn becomes permanently submerged in saltwater. |

I doubt that the sea Beach line was intended to be covered over since if that were the case, the stations would have had a tile finish instead of the current painted concrete. |

We can't do much about what past heypaul but your suggestion might work if the TA ever gets off their collective asses before the Sea Beach becomes a submarine or submerged in Davy Jones' locker. I'm surprised riders haven't raised hell about that. If I lived in Brooklyn I'd be phoning the TA every freakin' day until something was done. |

LION adds his doubts to your suggestion. Him sees that it went through the back yards and not under a street. If they put it under a street they would have to have had covered it, but it wasint so they didn't.Remember that it was originally a STEAM RAILROAD, and these were not generally built down the middle of the street, but people frequently built up against the ROW.
