IRT Platform Extension Dates

Does anyone know the exact years IRT platforms were extended?
The only one I've found for sure was Worth Street downtown side in 1948.

Also, did they run any 10 car local trains before all the extensions were complete in the 60's?

Thanks.

It was done over a long period.

Here's what I remember on the West Side IRT:

103rd Street and northward to 242nd: around 1948.

96th through Times Square: 1959

34th Street south to Rector Street, plus Park Place, Fulton, Wall Streets: mid-1960s.

Yes. Only the front 5 cars would platform on the Lex. Ave Local Brooklyn Bridge through Grand Central.

I din’t recall any 10 car locals on the IRT during the 1960s. When 8 car trains were run on Pelham, All cars could open on the S/B side but N/B only the first 4 cars would open between Bkln Br and Gr/Cent. On the West Side, local stations S/O T/Sq like the Lex lcl stations N/O G/Cent could only hold 8 cars. I’m not sure when Pelham trains went to to cars, but it wasn’t until some time around 1974 that the Bway Lcls went to 10 cars and at that time, the so called Bway Lcl/Exp which bypassed 215, 207, 157 and 145 Sts was eliminated as was rush hour short turn service from 137 St. The service patter was a bit unique in that i stead of a 2 min rush hour mainline S/O 137 St, with 8 car trains, the headway was 4 min with all trains with 10 cars coming out of 242 St. Midday, there were 137 St short turns but the trains were cut to 5 cars and the headway S/O 137 St was 5 min and 10 min N/O 137 St. That operation didn’t seem to last very long and the midday cutting was eliminated. I’m not sure of the exact chronology of the changes since I left the command center for the IND road in mid 1976 and by December of that year was in the schedule office but not yet on the IRT.

I read that since doors on the R units could not be selectively opened, trains were nine cars long until further platform extensions were done.

Were uptown and downtown done at different times? At Spring St, for example, the downtown side appears to have been extended earlier, with the IND-style name tablets and directional arrows. The uptown side appears to have been done in the 50s or 60s, with the simple block lettering and vertical tile similar to Grand St and the Nostrand extensions.

That was only on the 7 Av expresses. The ridership on the west side was such that 9 car trains could be operated on the expresses until the platforms were extended. Lex was a different story, so Lo-Vs had to be operated on the expresses during the week until all platforms were extended to 10 cars since 9 car trains wouldn’t have carried the loads.

The platforms on Lex were done at different times. As I mentioned in my post on this topic, until the N/B platforms were extended, only the first 4 cars of the 8 car trains would open N/B until either 14 St or G/Cent. I’m not sure which now, since it’s possible that the platforms between 14 St and G/Cent were extended earlier.

Yeah, the Lex has been overcrowded for years, hasn't it?

Interesting, thanks!

I figured that the IND-esque platform extensions were done pre-WW2 as they made the effort (at least on the West Side IRT N/O 96th) to closely duplicate the original station name tablets yet in an updated, streamlined manner.

Hate those generic late '50's/early '60's extensions, blah.

It seems that I saw a B of T annual report that indicated the platform extensions on the Lex stations S/O G/Cent were done immediately after WWII.
