Based off the video, the system looks a lot better operated with competant, thinking, breathing, humans, instead of computers. Just look at the employees who close the car doors making sure all the passengers are in. We need more employees not less. Lets put people back to work.

Don't make transit unnecessarily expensive. The subway trains are soon to technically require no one to operate them (although there will still be staff on board for contingencies), and that's a good thing.

Why is that a "good thing"? It hasn't proven cheaper in the case of DC Metro or BART (or perhaps even PATCO); and not even safer. The more parts, the more to break.

That's not the solution in and of itself. Remember that they were nine years into total control by the city after forcing the private companies into bankruptcy due to the 5¢ fare (which they promptly doubled to 10¢ the year before this video is dated).

Again, how would their operating costs be better if they two employees on the train?

Hell, I'd still rather have ZPTO and an extra maintenance employee to ensure ATO functionality and 90 second headways than to have TPTO and 4 minute headways.

and not even safer

I've been on a OPTO system that makes NYCTA's oldest sections look WMATA new, and I felt safe.

How are they lower without them? Show us that. Especially with government ownership.

Thanks for your perceptions.

You're right. The private operators would pay *more* than the government and not seek regulatory relief by trying to minimize the on-board crew. They'd employ five man crews to buy labour union peace and serve as an employer for excess labour.

Or, you know, they'd go OPTO with POP or London style Oyster fare collection, and minimize the number of employees needed to operate.
