I was there for Newark last PCC day. Got to ride some of the cars as they were taken out of service to the new shops. Rode #6 until I heard the parking lot in front of NPS upstairs was closing, so I had to go get my car.

Re: The PCC demise on the Newark City Subway: I was there on August 20, but had to get back to San Francisco. When I investigated air fares to arrive back on the 24th, they were prohibitive. But since there was a trip with the Triplexes on August 26, I was able to get a cheap fare to attend that, followed by Opening Day with the new Kinkis on Aug. 27.

Let's just say that the first day with the new LRVs was a complete meltdown! From reliable 6-minute waits for the PCCs to gaps of as much as 45 minutes with the Kinkis! And, of course, the Kinkis just didn't have the get-up-and go the PCCs had. With those, the passengers boarded, and the motorman was already accelerating from the stop as the front doors were closing. With the Kinkis, it was 4 seconds of warning sounds that the doors would close, 5 more seconds to close, and three seconds for the computer to acknowledge that the doors were closed, so the motorman could move the car. Progress? Piffle...

But at least I got one day of the last week in!

Not to mention they could (and did) maintain line of sight spacing, and have a car come into the station and pull up right behind the leader already in the station. It was really analog type fun. They were old, but they did their job really well even to the end of regular service.

And who, at that time, would have thunk that eleven of them would continue to provide faithful service on Muni's F-Line now. Not to mention #10 on the San Diego Silver Line!

My very first PCC ride was on San Francisco's J line in June of 1981. That car was part of the last new PCC order and by then, they were a sorry lot. They were breaking down constantly; in fact, the car I took back downtown bit the dust en route and we were all discharged. I saw it being towed back to the shop.

The first PCC ride I recall was on the Church Av line in Brooklyn in 1956 a few months before it was bustituted. Since my uncle lived in the Wash DC area, I rode DC Transit’s PCC quite often after that and was in DC for the last day of streetcar operation in January 1962.

1053. The way I liked to describe it is that although 766 was the official last car over the system, it discharged its passengers down the block from the entrance to Navy Yard Carhouse. The M/M on 1053 took us all the way to the door of the carhouse making it last ACTUAL car over the entire system.

Well, we were on the same car, then. I was there w/ my brand new the night before Nikon SP and a borrowed strobe. When I get to the scanning project... Anyway, I walked up to Union Station, caught a bus to the MD border and got picked up by the parents so I could deliver the Sunday paper route.
