When I look at some of the construction history of all of the NYCTS lines, I often wonder why certain locations were chosen for terminals. Since it was planned to extend the IND past that point, 179 St probably seemed as good a place as any for a “temporary” terminal. Another odd location is Euclid Ave. The main drag in that location is Crescent St which has (or had) stations on 2 BMT el lines in the are and the original terminal for the Fulton St el was Grant Av one station past Euclid so why Euclid? Who knows?

I think it was partly to reduce bus congestion in the Jamaica central business district by having some buses from eastern Queens terminate at 179 St instead of 169 St or Merrick Blvd. Also they needed that elaborate double deck relay structure to handle both E and F trains at rush hour headways.

IIRC they built the Nostrand Ave. line as far as they could with the funds that were at hand. The fact that Flatbush Ave. has side platforms makes it obvious that that line was intended to continue further.

Maybe Euclid was due to geometry. A mainline station at Pitkin and Grant would require much sharper connections from the mainline and yard to the branch.

Why Crescent St instead of Euclid Av? Why is Pitkin Yard where it is? Who knows. Perhaps Conduit Ave wasn't finalized (I think some parts opened in 1940) so the IND chose a more conservative alignment.

They remind me of Tokyo and Berlin in 1945. Disgraceful that they could let one of their signature lines go to seed like that, and you do know that when the Sea Beach was launched on June 22, 1915 the idea of an open cut, open air subway was considered something new and novel. Well I guess better late than never. I still think that of the Southern Division Lines the Brighton is still the apple of the Transit Division but that is only my opinion.

London's open cut lines were roofed over for the most part, with open vents to dissipate the smoke from steam locomotives in use then. The Sea Beach and open cut portion of the Brighton were never roofed over. I'm sure there was no intention of doing so, either.

While the Sea Beach and open cut portions of the Brighton Line were not roofed over in the true sense, there are several places along both lines with short tunnel portions to allow streets to cross overhead.

Right Steve, that's one of my favorite things about the Sea Beach. As for the streets above, those tunnels allow those avenues to allow traffic to pass without lights or traffic jams. As for the London subways, I rode them and those open cuts don't even seem like them since they are roofed over and almost seem like the trains run underground.
