Well, why not on subchat? The schedule is mass transit-like. And this is only one of about ten ferry routes between long island and fire island, out of bay shore, sayville and Patchogue (bellport runs a boat for village residents only to their beach on fire island). All along the shoreline of the great south bay you can hear the ferries passing back and forth, all day, and part of the night. Serious stuff. Plus, it's all accessible via mass transit, train and bus. Hell, the bay shore maple ave ferry terminal is like a bus terminal afa transportation services available. And...it's privately owned and operated (bay shore also has a separate dock for ferries to the town owned Atlantique beach).

It is a neat little system. The Great South Bay probably has the most elaborate water transportation system on the East Coast outside of New York Harbor. I am a regular rider of FIF's Ocean Beach and Seaview runs. (And coincidentally, was on the 10:55 out of OB this morning, which was using the 1990 Voyager. Ocean Beach usually gets the 2 newest boats assigned, which are the 2011 Fire Island Queen and 2013 Fire Islander. All three ships and their 4 sisters are functionally identical, so it does not really matter which ends up where)

Love this system. I need to go more often, I haven't been in almost 10 years

One Columbus Day weekend a few years ago I absolutely had to get to my office on Monday. I went with the family out to Davis Park for the weekend, but the only ferry leaving was going to be from The Pines on Monday, the Davis Park boat wouldn't run until 11. So I woke up at about 5am and started walking, with my computer in the bag and I didn't realize how hard it would be to walk in the pitch black, in the sand, all the way over with a computer hanging around my shoulders. Every time I had done that before was just a slow casual walk, but I needed to walk briskly. I started out on Burma Road, a sandy path behind the dunes, made it to Water Island, a small group of houses with some boardwalks, and then along the ocean to the Pines. I was exhausted by the time I got there. Then I took the ferry, a taxi, and the LIRR to Hunterspoint, where I caught the 7.

Hear you. and the s47 bus to field three, Robert moses beach, out of Babylon is a good way to get to the west end of fire island. did it this morning. easy enough to take the bus there and walk along the shoreline to any of the island towns and catch a ferry back

It is an amazing (and amazingly accessible) natural resource, your "adventure" notwithstanding. it is quite an experience, to walk that beach in the dead of night. all you hear are the waves breaking on the shore. and the night sky is simply beautiful.

When I was in law school at Hofstra, my friends and I would sometimes take the ferry to Ocean Beach. It was a fun place.

I haven't been to Fire Island since 1969. We would go there while visiting my aunt and uncle when they lived in Farmingdale.
