And this is only one of about ten ferry routes between long island and fire island, out of bay shore, sayville and Patchogue (bellport runs a boat for village residents only to their beach on fire island). All along the shoreline of the great south bay you can hear the ferries passing back and forth, all day, and part of the night. Serious stuff. Plus, it's all accessible via mass transit, train and bus. Hell, the bay shore maple ave ferry terminal is like a bus terminal afa transportation services available. And...it's privately owned and operated (bay shore also has a separate dock for ferries to the town owned Atlantique beach).
