The Pope's visit in Philadelhia

For The Pope weekend in Philadelphia,, Septa says basically "all hands on deck", with an "A" & B" picking , and mandatory drafting.
A modified weekday schedule will be run. Operators who normally have Saturday & Sunday off will be possibly drafted.

The Pope's visit in Philadelphia—SEPTA, PATCO temporarily stop selling Papal passes

Philadelphia area's transit system halts papal pass sales

Overwhelming customer demand has forced the Philadelphia area's transit system to halt the sale of special rail passes to be used during Pope Francis' September visit to the city.

Andrew Busch, a spokesman for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, said the number of customers buying tickets online was significantly higher than expected when tickets went on sale online Monday morning. Many users received error messages or were unable to load pages. Busch said that just minutes after the launch, visitors to the site had loaded up more than 64,000 "shopping carts" that contained more than 250,000 tickets overall.

Busch said technicians are working on the problem and SEPTA is expected to announce Tuesday when ticket sales will resume. He said the majority of the transactions attempted Monday were not completed, which means most of the passes will still be available when sales resume.

The Port Authority Transit Corporation, which runs trains from stops in southern New Jersey to downtown Philadelphia, also started selling special Freedom cards online and at the Broadway station in Camden, New Jersey. PATCO passengers who don't have them won't be permitted on the trains on Sept. 26-27.

A one-day pass costs $5 and a two-day pass is $10 for those 5 and older. There is a limit of 10 cards per purchase.

Passengers may use their regular Freedom cards during the pope's visit and pay $2.50 for each ride.

SEPTA won't sell papal passes this week

This is hilarious.

Also: SEPTA has also postponed the planned sale of three-day papal passes for SEPTA's subways, trolleys, and buses. SEPTA had said those passes would go on sale next Monday, but said Tuesday it would wait until the Regional Rail sales problems are fixed.

SEPTA plans to eventually sell 750,000 of those transit passes, good for Sept. 26 through 28.

I'm not sure the headline really represents what is happening. The 500k to the company represents way more than the e-commerce platform work. But if I was in the news business I guess I would use catchy headlines also. It's not like Philly.com is a natural draw on its own.

I agree. Sorry for being lazy and not editing the headline. The more interesting content is in the article, including the SEPTA spokesperson not knowing in this vendor has had an prior experience with e-commerce and the vendor not being able to provide any examples of such. That's crazy.

At first I was thrilled that Pope Francis was coming to Philly (and I'm not even Catholic). Now I've decided to get as far away from the city as I can. SEPTA could screw up a Lionel starter set, let alone a real railroad.

It's now being reported that when the city celebrated the Phillies' World Series win, more than 2,000,000 people descended on the city for the parade and celebration; and everything worked out fine without draconian measures by SEPTA. So, I don't understand their panic.

Because they made the mistake of having that parade on Friday afternoon when they could not borrow equipment. I would have insisted on that parade being Saturday night no matter who it inconvenienced because SEPTA could have more easily borrowed RR cars from elsewhere and not had to deal with those having to go to work.

PATCO likely had the capacity to handle the huge crowds that came for that parade, but even there I'm sure trains were WAY more crowded than usual (why I would have insisted on that parade being Saturday night instead of Friday afternoon).

The Pope's visit is a MUCH bigger issue because there are going to be massive security concerns you would never have with a parade for the Phillies winning the World Series, especially since the Phillies Parade went southward outside Center City to the Sports Complex.

Of course, some people who actually have to be at work that weekend and can't be put up in/stay at hotels are going to be royally screwed by this, but what happens if you say do things normal, wind up with more people than the system can handle and it backs up other train traffic, especially along the NE Corridor?

The more we hear about this , it seems like they will not get the massive crowds, and people will just stay home. The proof will be in the pudding during Papal week.

Or what happened is a lot of people who want to come to Philly for the Pope's visit can't because they have to be at work (there are two other religious holidays the week of the Pope's visit that many people have to take off for).

Philly will likely still see massive crowds, just not quite a massive as originally thought.

The SEPTA BSL graphics and text description for the Pope service are incredibly unclear.

You have to be very multicultural to celebrate Yom Kippur and Eid al Adha and also want to attend the papal Mass.

Not how I meant that:

In other words, there are people who may have planned to come to see the Pope, however, because other workers may have scheduled vacation time around Yom Kippur or Eid al Adha, a good number of those who wanted to go to Philly found they can't go because they have to fill in for others who had already requested time off for the religious holidays, something organizers in Philly probably failed to take into account.

The Pope will stand by a turnstile and personally pay for everyone's fare.
