WMATA's 4th of July Service Pattern

I was trying to get back to my hotel in Silver Spring afterward and the green line was doing its best Japanese subway impression... the "there's another train right behind" BS doesn't work when the countdown clock is showing 8 minutes. Yet plenty of yellows going out of service to turn around. Running the Yellow as normal to Ft. Totten would have gone a long way.

There is no pocket track there, so turning trains would block the through trains on the Green Line to Greenbelt. Looking at the WMATA service advisory, it seems they could have been clearer about this. However, Metro did recommend that you avoid transferring and use a station on your line, in your case, Farragut North, Metro Center, Gallery Place, Judiciary Square, or Union Station. Starting in 1999 and until a few years ago, they ran a special service pattern on July 4th, but it never featured Yellow Line trains to Fort Totten or Greenbelt IIRC.

Like I have said many time before, WMATA has a rolling stock shortage. With the opening of the Silver line almost a year ago the rolling stock shortage has become more acute. I had thought that transferring to the red somewhere other than Gallery Pl would have been better for avoiding crowds.
