Yes they did also make the move up later in the day. My friend caught them (Mr Railfan, otherwise known as Mr Luk)

I was unable to catch the move, as I was busy (It is a weekday after all! :D)

It took them a while to get up to speed on the Brighton line, but given a lot of tangent track, they could fly!

Question on that Triplex-R-1/9 lashup: do the door controls of both car classes trainline now as well? In other words, if you were to work the triggers and slap the caps on the R-1/9s, would the doors on the Triplexes respond?

Correct. The Ds have special door jumpers which can be seen next to the bulkhead doors on the cars. The R-9s have drum switches which are set to energize the C/R’s operating position and intermediate and end points in the train. However, I suspect that if the C/R’s position were set with the R-9s on one side and the Ds on the other the doors would work since ti wouldn’t; be necessary to have the door control circuits pass between the 2 sections.

Would you know why the Ds had jumpers for the doors, instead of having the door circuits on the electric portion? The Standards were designed for ease of coupling and uncoupling without jumpers, even though MUDC was not provided for when they were built. But by the time the Ds were designed, MUDC was the future.

The standards had jumpers that had to be connected from car to car. I don't think there were any electrical contacts in the couplers. I guess they used to sepatae cars at Rockaway Parkway for the overnights, and you would always see the jumpers along the fence.

The electric portions or “slides” on the steels contained all the train line circuits except for the door controls. When MUDC was added, there was no room on the slides for any additional circuits thus the 9 point door jumpers had to be added and to facilitate insertion of the jumpers, the hammerhead brake handle was developed. imagine that when the D types came along it was easier for the BMT to continue the practice of having a separate jumper for the door controls and since the operation was successful, the practice was continued on the Multis.
