The electric portions or “slides” on the steels contained all the train line circuits except for the door controls. When MUDC was added, there was no room on the slides for any additional circuits thus the 9 point door jumpers had to be added and to facilitate insertion of the jumpers, the hammerhead brake handle was developed. imagine that when the D types came along it was easier for the BMT to continue the practice of having a separate jumper for the door controls and since the operation was successful, the practice was continued on the Multis.
