From "A History Of The NYC Subway System Part 1 by Joseph Cunningham and Leonard DeHarr".

On January 17, 1962, a special train with three "dream cars" ran on the West Side IRT. The car included carpeting, champagne, pretzels, window curtains and flowers. The cars left 242nd St. at 10:01 AM. Invited guests boarded at Times Square. The train started with a jerk, drinks spilled and tempers frayed. the affair was a complete fiasco.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, you could rent a "party car" which would end up as the 11th car on a train. When I was a conductor back in 1970, I got to "chaperone" one of them for Clay Felker's New York Magazine Christmas party. Booze was served in a similar style and the car was all decked out for Christmas. We did a round trip from West 4th out to Euclid and back.

Motorman had some adventures on the return trip since there weren't any 11 car markers past each station. :)

That was my first thought! I'd be a little concerned that the 11th car would be hanging over a switch or something!

The consist was interesting. 10 R32's plus an R34 as the "party car" on the end. The road conductor was helping the motorman spot the train and at a few stops, they did have to inch past the homeball to spot the train. All I had to do was be there to wave people off at the storm door trying to enter and be there in case we had to key people off from the cutout car. It was fun. Getting paid to pretty much just stand there for the round trip. :)
