The good of the many is trumped by the whining of the few. Of course, that pattern repeats itself all over the city. |

Please allow for a lead/spur to branch off and go down 19 Avenue to eventually reach LGA.And please use traditional boxgirder El construction for this extension. wayne |

That would draw complaints from the NIMBYs. Every time you add to a project, you collect more enemies. Trains are to run on this extension only for lay-ups and put-ins, and not during the mid-day or at nights.Soundproofed concrete structure to be as very quiet as possible, you should not be able to hear the train passing above, which would be moving at yard speeds in any event. It will be a SINGLE TRACK structure blocking as little sunlight as possible, and it will rise from the existing elevation to a taller elevation. Pre-form the concrete riser, digging the footings will look like ordinary utility work. Then on one weekend come in and plant the risers. Project ought to be half done before the NIMBYs figure out what is going on. ROAR |

They have in the past. However, enviornmentalists are another matter.Digging up ex Con Edison land to construct the neccessary lay up yard might provoke kicking & screaming by said group a/c the fears of releasing toxic materials that are assumed to be there thanks to the utilities long term presence in the area. Forcing Con Ed to do a cleanup would entail a long term court fight. That in itself might be the deal breaker. Also, the fact that there is no great love for Con Edison in these parts in the first place doesn't help matters much. Even if the city "emanite domains" the property, that means the taxpayer would have to pay for the clean-up.That would be strike two. |

Well then this would indeed be a good time to do it. If MTA and Con Ed can agree, maybe the MTA can take over the land for the cost of rehabilitating it. It cannot be that hard to clean it up.ROAR |

Then you have to worry about "enviornmental impact studies" which could add years for this idea to become reality. Just think if there were the same degree of enviornmental impact concerns say 150+ years ago, the Hudson Line might never have been built.BTW don't think for a second that you could start to build an elevated track down the middle of 31st street without the locals there being on to the caper as soon as the first spade is turned north of Ditmars. Their radar is up & will not go down until a rail link to LGA is built...somewhere else. |

Beebo would have the train turn right @ Grand Central, run alongside the expressway until Astoria Blvd splits off, have it run along 23rd Avenue, then *plunk* itself onto LaGuardia. Hits all the rental car places & everything. A yard? Do we need a yard? There's always St Michaels Cemetary :-)(Alright, we'll use some of LaGuardia's parking for a yard. Elevated!) |

MainR says using the same type of modern construction, build a ramp from 31st Street down to the GCP and connect to LGA- and run FREQUENT service. Designate it the NX :) |

This does not apply to dictators like Obama, he should not be allowed to do all of this crap without congress. ROAR |

We need a yard for the Broadway Local, otherwise it would NEVER reach a yard.Just tell the people in Astoria that we need to build this yard or else discontinue service on the Astoria Line at night and on weekends, that way we can use the line itself as our new yard. You see, all of this has to do with the new Second Avenue Subway. EXPRESS trains will run via Bridge and 63rd Street. LOCAL trains will run via Tunnel and 60th Street. Astoria can only access 60th Street ERGO it must be the LOCAL The Broadway Local is also the 4th Avenue Local in Brooklyn, ERGO it must go to Ft. Hamilton. Neither Fort H nor Astoria have a yard. They need to have a yard. Extending Astoria to Con Ed will provide that yard AND will allow the (R) train to be automated since it would no longer cross over or be used by any other route. ROAR |

This elevated (I assume!) route over the Triboro Bridge Approach and GCP to LGA would be a grat idea. Except that elephant in the room- the huge Hell Gate Viaduct that crosses the Parkway, east of Steinway St. |

There's plenty of third track layup on the Astoria line, between 40th Ave-25th/Hoyt Ave. I do like the proposed LGA route from 31st/Ditmars with a subway/el ramp, to 19th Ave. |

Immediately to the east of 31 st St and north of 20th Avenue is a park, the property to the north of that is exclusively Con Ed property, yes it is green, and they must be a reason why Con Ed did not use it. Some think that it's pollution would be a major environmental issue. but LION just wants to put a subway yard over the top of it.Is that too much to ask? ROAR |
