It was a "new" trolley line in which most trolley systems only went downhill.

Of course there was the Riverside Line (1959 IIRC).

Since urban caving seems to be growing as a sport, maybe the NYTM should hold a seance in the Malbone Street Tunnel.

Great find!

What was the "conductor's box"? Did they mean dispatcher's office?

To the Leonard Brothers, it was well worth it.

And initially, at least, to Tandy Corp., which took over the store and built Tandy Center, also served by these ex-Washington trolleys. Later, the PCCs were rebuilt with new bodies, called "Radio Shack Modern", but when they came around that turn at the bottom of that grade and roared up to the top station, there was that old familiar PCC wheel squeal and classic PCC motor hum. A marvelous ride!

Thanks, Irwin, for posting this!

Wow!! This video is too cool!
Thanks for sharing!
This tunnel has been often written about and cited as a subway oddity, but I've only seen a few still photographs of the line, above ground.
It was wonderful to see the period film, and of course exploring the length of the tunnel.

The early b & w construction shot looks like it could have been in the Bronx for the Sedgwick-Jerome tunnel.

If I recall, the box had levers to control the switches. The line really didn't need a dispatcher, per se. Walkie Talkies and line of sight were more than enough.

Thanks.
Nice photos at the link.

During the 90's field trips, the northbound tunnel was accessible at Sedgwick - there was some kind of very wide, up and down rolling garage style gate - that resembled security kind of gates you see in storefronts. At the Jerome-Anderson platform, there was an open entrance (possibly previously sealed by a door?) where you could enter the length of the platform that was in tunnel, and from there climb down to the former right-of-way.

A woman was on that first field trip, who had grown up in the neighborhood during the 50's and remembered and rode the shuttle, when it was in operation.
She also said, that for awhile, after abandonment, the entire structure - tunnels and platforms, were acessible. She and her friends would explore it, and play hide and seek throughout it - serendipity of someone like this showing up on a tour, and then having these great stories about it - another typical "only in New York story." :)

A lot of stuff you could explore "back in the day" has been sealed or fenced, it seems.

One was going underneath the Brighton south of Neptune Avenue, where you can clearly trace the caps on the A1 and A2 track piers showing where those tracks descended to the surface for the old Brighton Hotel station.
