Has anyone gone to the viewing platform there? How frequent would the trains be on a Sunday afternoon? Any other tips? Waste of time? I MIGHT be passing through the area soon and MIGHT be able to convince my traveling companion that it would be a good place to take a break.

Check it out. Trains are quite frequent unless you hit an odd lull, but those are hard to predict. Remember that there is a fee to go up to the viewing area.

I've been to Horseshoe Curve 4 or 5 times in my life. The last couple of times I stayed for an hour and saw maybe 2 trains. CSX does provide a schedule of trains but the schedule is worth the paper it is written on. The problem with the curve is the surrounding foliage going up both mountains. As it fills in around the mountain you lose the sight of the trains as they approach the curve. A few years ago they collected donations to have someone cut back the trees etc. but a lot of this has grown back in. This might be a good month to go before all the foliage starts to bloom. There is a small gift shop and small museum to fill on some time at the curve. There is a great train museum in Altoona that you can buy a combination ticket for. This can provide 90-120 minutes of entertainment and I've never been disappointed with their displays.
If can make it a two day trip go to Johnstown and check on the history of the horrible floods that have washed out the city and the railroads.

I think you meant NS instead of CSX. NS owns the former Pennsy part of Penn Central.

It's worthwhile to stop there even if there aren't any trains. Definitely go to the Johnstown Flood Museum and Railroaders Museum in Altoona.

Unfortunately, Amtrak's schedule doesn't provide round trip travel between Johnstown and Altoona with a short layover.
