Good to hear that SEPTA is becoming more proactive - I've become too used to Philadelphia being the land of "temporary" suspensions that last decades, or forever. First one I recall was Route 47 because of construction around Reading Terminal.

But are they? These are only proposals.

Bi-level coaches will increase ridership without lengthening trains: a Silverliner V car can sit 109 passengers, but bi-levels can sit somewhere between 120 and 170 passengers. A recent study determined that bi-levels weren’t too tall for the tunnels SEPTA trains need to squeeze through. SEPTA is looking to purchase similar coaches to those used by NJ Transit and Boston’s MBTA.
There is no way that a NJT-type MLV will ever seat up to 170 pax, unless SEPTA becomes daring and puts 3-2 seating in them. SEPTA is about as known for "daring" as their trains are known for bathrooms.

The "Catching Up" slogan reeks of as much desperation as "We're Getting There".

Forgot to mention: The T's bilevels are most likely too tall for the CCCT. The NJT MLVs will probably make it clearance-wise, but it'd be most likely regarded as too much money by SEPTA to spend on 3-2 seating for them versus the standard 2-2 that NJT uses.

(And of course, if the T hadn't been so stupid as to build high platforms on what were generally all-low-platform commuter stations and terminals, they could have used gallery cars, judging by the height above rail of their current bilevels.)

Bi-level enthusiasts love to exaggerate. The 170 number should be 141.

The NJT car would require some clearance work in the Center City Tunnel due to some twists and turns with some body overhang.

they could have used gallery cars

Why would anybody buy those forsaken POS cars when the BBD bilevels exist?

Wouldn't make much sense to do that after putting a combination of 3-2 and 2-2 seating in the Silverliner Vs.

The "Catching Up" slogan reeks of as much desperation as "We're Getting There".

Neither of which is their current slogan, which is prominently featured on the website.

VRE had experience with gallery cars, BBD bilevels, and Kawasaki bilevels and chose to standardize on gallery cars.

As per info provided by SEPTA during a visit yesterday, subway stations will have TVMs. Outlying Regional Rail stations will not; passengers will be expected to purchase SEPTA Key fare media online, at 1000 retail outlets, or SEPTA offices. Ticketless passengers boarding at outlying stations will be able to purchase their tickets from the conductor.

Thanks, Bob. On the trolley , trolleybus, bus system seniors will be able to swipe their drivers license in the old fare box.(I'm doing that now).
I'm hoping that TVM will have a similar provision and also the RR conductors will have something that will take your drivers license.

Thanks for posting those excellent photos.
