Understanding Terrapin Station

Just about everybody has had an unpleasant encounter with Therapy Station. I finally figured him out.

He craves attention, even negative attention, because it's better than NO attention.

In his universe, he is always right. It's a waste of time trying to prove him wrong, because if he is wrong, he'll never admit it.

He repeats "I'm right, you're wrong" or "I see you gave up so I'm right" or "Proff."

Don't waste your time trying to have an intelligent conversation with him because he doesn't have intelligence.

He does his best to get posters angry so they lash out at him. He just laughs because he succeeded in manipulating. He will twist your words to make himself look good - - at your expense.

Instead, don't get angry and get high blood pressure. Just pity him. You'll find it easier to deal with him.

He doesn't care how many people leave this list because he sees this list like the TV Show "Survivor" where the last person wins.

You let it die but he knows somebody else will bring it up and continue to feed his neuroses. He likes attention so I'm exposing him so hopefully a lot of people will catch on and stop feeding his neuroses.

He is not worthy of any response, Nada!
Go about your own business, he is not worthy.
Shut out unworthy thoughts, responses and waste from important meaningful topics. It works fine for me. I skip over unworthy posts.

Actually Dave its TS who has been dominating the three boards for the past several weeks. Nostalgia is simply trying to tell people not to respond to him but too often that advice falls on deaf ears.

Why do you think I haven't made any almanac postings since February? I simply got sick and tired of trying to navigate the minefield of angry and hateful postings.

I can screen out the posts made by TS. I don't read his posts or his responses to other posts. But then we have all the guys who feel they must respond to his posts. We get it .You don't like the man. I agree, but after you've called him a stupid, damn idiot for the 99th time its gets a little old. Your part of the problem now as well.

Everyone gets so angry that they start fighting with each other over the most innocuous things and once you've done that you've lost the war. He won. He got you so riled up that he may as well be pulling your strings.

To Summarize;

A) Thank you Nostalgia. Your post was long overdue.

B) Don't read TS's post and don't respond to him. If you do your as bad as he is. Do you really want to be identified as a "Troll?

C) This board is a valuable source of rail information. I've used t many to to ask questions and find out information, especially from the younger guys who are out there riding the trains every day. Twenty or thirty years ago we would have given our eyeteeth to of had a resource like this. TS by himself can't pull this board down but if enough you fight with him Larry might just decide to shut it down the same way that Dave shut down the old sub-talk board. Then you might have to go to a quote "moderated" board where the conversation is much more restrictive. Please value the resource that you have here.

Larry, RedbirdR33

I included the part about pity to offer an alternative feeling to anger, which Therapy Station engenders. Once I stopped being angry and ready to lash out, I could see things clearer and fall into his trap of being manipulated.

Also posted on BusChat.

Thing is, such a thread as this one provides the very attention that is being sought.

People can be complicated. The Internet has its cons in that you don't know (for sure) what a person looks like or much about them at all. But you have to take advantage of the pros. There's no need to reply to a post right away or at all. (You can therefore choose the emotional state you are in when you reply). You do not need to click on everything or process everything.

I've been doing just fine on these boards for 15 years. If a thread looks like it's going downhill, stop following it, or maybe check in after a couple of days and see if it somehow came back to the topic or something constructive. If someone replies to you with an argument surrounded by negative personal comments, reply to the argument only. If an entire reply, in your judgement, is negative personal comments and truly no argument, then don't reply at all. It's not too hard; it just takes a bit of discipline.

Even a nasty handle can be correct about some things at times, too. Thank him if you learn something, politely offer corrections to any faulty logic you may sense (only if you're sure), and ignore everything else.

Don't ever say "I'm not responding," or fall into the realm of the personal yourself. Then there's no end. To ignore someone, it must be perfect ignorance, without verbally indicating such ignorance!

"This board is a valuable source of rail information. ... I've used it many to to ask questions and find out information,"

- you couldn't be more right about that! ... and we have a community too.... let's get some of the former posters back if that's possible.

" ... especially from the younger guys who are out there riding the trains every day. ... Twenty or thirty years ago we would have given our eyeteeth to of had a resource like this"

- for a field of interest that is so very technical at its base, there has always been a strong and connecting strand of oral history: the passing on all kinds of history (industrail archeology, political, real estate, electrical engineering developments etc.) as they relate to urban transit, between "old timers" and as Larry said, younger folks who are experiening developments out on the road as they happen.

Better posters than you have tried. At least some of them had the good sense to confine their whining to the OT board rather than dumping it here, or worse, crossposting their bellyaching on Buschat.

Thing is, he leaves, and the idiots who were fighting with him find someone else to fight with. Or they fight amongst each other. TS is a convenient scapegoat but hardly the sole source of the problem.

You haven't been paying attention. The key word in the thread is UNDERTANDING. I haven't written he should be banned because I know that's a waste of time. The purpose of this thread is to discuss the best way of dealing with him so that posters don't get upset and leave.

I've changed the way I deal with him and suggested that others change their way they deal with him. If people stop responding in anger, that will cut off fuel for his fire.

He's a problem in Bus Chat so I posted there as well. While everybody hasn't liked this thread, there are more positive comments than negative.
