In 1925, it was entrusted with the funds to build subways, gaining its independence from the Board of Estimate and the old Transit Commission. |

When he died in '71 we bailed to Bay Ridge but not before my mother got mugged and my car stolen. The Ft. Greene projects, once a haven foe middle class folks, had become a haven rampant in crime. I saw an article in the a 1937 Brooklyn Eagle that suggested removing the Lexington el. The street, itself, had nothing on it except residential buildings and a few small stores. The neighborhood began to "change"(dare I say more?) beginning in the early 1930, starting around Lexington & Grand, according to photos I've seen. Lexington Ave never had trolley tracks because of trolley lines on parallel streets. Even if they wanted a bus route on it, the placement of the support columns directly under the el tracks made that impossible. The Lex el was probably kept up because of the Brooklyn Navy yard, during WWII. After the war, there was talk of removing it in 1948, but nothing came of it, until 1950. |

The BofT kept the Lex in part to run a service for riders impacted by the closing of the Fulton el, with the A train going only as far as Rockaway Avenue. In 1944 the Park Row connection was gone and by 1950 they felt they didn't need it anymore. |

Did the Lex have lower ridership because the Myrtle was scheduled for more service? If the Lex was scheduled for less service, with longer headways, (except during the rush hour?), than wouldn't people have felt less inclined to use it, walking west to the Mrytle or the IND? If the Lex had had better service, I wonder if it would have lasted longer? Although, if largly residential - I drove through there a few years ago, many small apartment buildings (maybe not that much comparative population density?), could that have been the reason for low ridership rather than lack of constant service? |
