Feel free to add to or comment on either of these lists.

Bus Beats Light-Rail
1) Vehicles can pass each other.
2) Vehicles can detour easily.
3) No wires hanging over roadways.
4) Usually simpler fare payment / enforcement procedures
5) No need for elaborate stops/stations, just a marker sign

Light-Rail Beats Bus
1) Longer vehicles without added employees
2) No need to check clearance when making turns
3) Quieter
4) Smoother ride, especially with cobblestone streets and such
5) Easier to predict scheduling

With a few exceptions, light rail is electric and buses are diesel. The air is more breathable in the vicinity of electric vehicles.

I disagree with those two. If you're doing an apples to apples comparison of a route with a fixed number of riders, then no matter if you use buses or light-rail, you could have the same exact stops/stations and the same exact fare payment and enforcement procedures.

Light Rail Beats Bus - Not as vulnerable to winter weather.

Light Rail is basically a train, usually only damn near bizzards conditions cripple rail service, a little slush and bus service is damn near FUBAR'd lol.

I'll never a couple of years ago when we had a light winter storm and my subway commute on an open cut outdoor line was fine, then found out people on several different bus routes had rough commutes cause of the storm.

B 4. POP works without reference to wheel or power source.
5. SF Muni has many streetcar (Light Rail) stops marked by a paint stripe on the tarmac and on a light pole.

L Wish I could agree, but poorly managed streetcars like San Jose's are slow, circuitous, and do not adhere to schedule very well in my riding experience.

TOD ... Transit Oriented Development:
This is a big one for downtowns in the US,
i.e. downtowns are dying & the street car has turned that around.
folks are buying real estate & opening up new stores ... people are coming back into the city to shop, etc.

In NYC we don't see that ...
