There's several photos taken by Danny Lyon in 1970 along the passageway from B/Q and the 2/3/4 at Atlantic Ave.

This is obviously a doctored photo. Why should we believe anything you tell us?

Next thing you are going to tell us is that the fare was once a nickel.

I don't think it's fair to accuse me of being doctored. If not for my psychiatrist, I would probably be in bad shape.

I liked it when they said

WEIGH
YOUR
FATE

which was quickly made more accurate by scratching the "E" out of the last line.

I can also remember soda vending machines. At one time they only charged five cents, but by the time I was in High School it was up to a dime (that was when the fare was 15 cents). No cans or bottles - a cup dropped down and was filled with carbonated water and syrup (just like at the corner "candy store" soda fountain - anyone else remember those?

I remember the soda fountain machines. One evening I attempted to purchase a soda from one of them at 59 St IND. When the cup came out, it missed the tray in the machine and would have fallen to the platform if I hadn’t caught it. By the time I got it back under the spout, all the syrup was gone and all I got was unflavored seltzer or a “2 cents plain” for 10 cents.

Like you I remember the soda machines, the ice cream vending machines, the peanut and candy dispensers, and the weight scales. There were several donut stands in the subways. I remember the Nedicks shops that were at major stations like Columbus Circle and the Chock Full Of Nuts shops on many streets. I remember bus passes that changed every month, while the subway pass only to be obtained once a year but at certain times of the school year one had to pay for their trips. I remember a 20-dollar bill went very far. I remember that Union Square (and a few other stations) had a series of shops inside, and the famous record store that used to be at Times Square. Several stations had barber shops, for example along the long tunnel to/from the 42nd Street shuttle.

I remember when taking a quarter to the store as a kid meant that one could buy a soda, apple pie and candy. I remember the subway fare was 30 and it went up to 35 cents. I remember movies at about $3.00 where with a 5-dollar bill one could also buy popcorn and soda, when plenty of movies were only showing one or two pictures.

I remember walking along 149th Street-Third Avenue in the Bronx shopping with family, and taking the Third Avenue El, and its connection to the subway, and the wooden escalators (I think). I remember the very dark subway stations of the CC and D trains int he Bronx and how I thought the walls were yellow, and when they gained lights I realized that the wall tiles were white.

Yes, no I feel old. (Smile)
Mike

What do you mean YOU feel, old. I remember the 5 cent fare although I was too young to have to pay it. I also rode the 3 Av El all the way from So/Fy to Gun Hill as well as the Nedicks, Savarinette and Yankee Frankee stands at various locations on the system. Before the NYC sales tax was increases, relative to food at restaurants, it only applied to food items over $1.00 so many locations like Woolworths featured the 99 Cent lunch which was usually a hot dog and a still (non carbonated) drink for 99 cents to avoid the sales tax.

I also remember the slot machines - I mean the candy machines.

You put in your money, pull the handle and hope the candy drops down.

In the waning days of those machines I used to hit the jackpot. I put in the money, pulled the handle and sometimes 6 candy bars would drop down. On top of that I'd get my money back and then some.

I remember the scales and candy.gum machines... if they still had these items on the platform today, they would probably include "check your blood pressure for a buck"
