Like you I remember the soda machines, the ice cream vending machines, the peanut and candy dispensers, and the weight scales. There were several donut stands in the subways. I remember the Nedicks shops that were at major stations like Columbus Circle and the Chock Full Of Nuts shops on many streets. I remember bus passes that changed every month, while the subway pass only to be obtained once a year but at certain times of the school year one had to pay for their trips. I remember a 20-dollar bill went very far. I remember that Union Square (and a few other stations) had a series of shops inside, and the famous record store that used to be at Times Square. Several stations had barber shops, for example along the long tunnel to/from the 42nd Street shuttle.

I remember when taking a quarter to the store as a kid meant that one could buy a soda, apple pie and candy. I remember the subway fare was 30 and it went up to 35 cents. I remember movies at about $3.00 where with a 5-dollar bill one could also buy popcorn and soda, when plenty of movies were only showing one or two pictures.

I remember walking along 149th Street-Third Avenue in the Bronx shopping with family, and taking the Third Avenue El, and its connection to the subway, and the wooden escalators (I think). I remember the very dark subway stations of the CC and D trains int he Bronx and how I thought the walls were yellow, and when they gained lights I realized that the wall tiles were white.

Yes, no I feel old. (Smile)
Mike
