Strange Metrocard Situation

I got off Metro North at Grand Central and wanted to load value onto my Metrocard. I went to a vending machine inside the Terminal and put my card into the machine and selected "add value." The machine registered the value as $28.50. I went to add money and the machine rejected the money and displayed "See Agent."
I went to the booth at Grand Central and the agent told me my card was voided; all value on the card was taken.

I don't have a clue how that happened. Neither did the agent.

They should have given you the prepaid envelope and form to send it in. There is a dept. that helps with defective cards, cards too old to transfer value at a booth, and other events like yours. They can access the computer records to see what happened. The forms are also available from the MTA site, your stamp then. Takes a while, but any time I have used the service, I have received a satisfactory response.
Maybe some other posters can add to this.

There are all kinds of ways the MTA steals your money with Metrocards...for example, I once added $25 to my Metrocard, and right after I fed the MVM my money, the screen froze, went dark, a red "OUT OF SERVICE" appeared on the LED display, and the machine sure didn't spit my Metrocard out. So, now, I was stuck with no Metrocard, just the MVM number, which I duly reported to the MTA. But without an MC serial number, I was screwed. Another slick thing the MTA gets away with, is the "swipe again" thing. I've swiped again "at this turnstile", only to discover that two fares had been deducted!

This is to say nothing of the fuzzy math you have to do, if you don't want the MTA to keep getting those odd balances that inevitably accumulate on your MC...LOL!

I've been very lucky and have not gotten screwed by the "swipe again" deal. I always use a credit card in the machine, you get a little extra help if you contest the charge through them. Doesn't always work, but it is a lot harder for the MTA to blow off Chase or American Express than one of us.

The postings have taught me two lessons:
1) Mail a defective card for repair
2) Don't maintain a high balance on the card to minimize the amount of fare that can be lost.

Thank you for the information. Fortunately, this "life lesson" wasn't very expensive. Most "life lessons" are very expensive.

Ha. That does seem to cover almost all the cases people are complaining about. I guess if it ate your card, you paid cash, and you didn't get a receipt, that's the one case where you're out of luck.

This would be helpful if I knew it at the time of the problem. The booth agent should have known about these solutions and offered one of them to me.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You honestly thought you had no recourse??? I would never have thrown it away. It's only logical that there is a method for getting your money back.

A possible cause (and maybe this is an erroneous comment):
You went to a vending machine inside the Terminal? I wonder whether you tried to add value at a Metro North vending machine instead of a NYC Subway vending machine. Where the subway meets other jurisdictions, not all machines offer the same options. This goes for subway/Metro-North, subway/LIRR, subway/AirTrain.
Maybe the cause of the problem.

It was definitely a MTA Metrocard machine. I'm not sure you can add value to a MetroNorth ticket.

There are MetroCard Vending Machines inside of GCT itself, as well as in the Grand Central subway station. I would suggest trying your luck with another machine. Sometimes, the reader in the machine itself might be faulty.

Well that's sad. People should not believe the lies that say that the MTA is completely inept. They are often inept, but not completely inept. Hopefully you've learned an important lesson here.

Om PATH, whose turnstiles take your card and spit it out, once ate and did not return, my mother's card with $18 on it. I was with her. She picked up their assistance phone, they let her through. She got a replacement card, though it was 4 - 6 months later. The card probably went from PATH to MTA, then back to PATH to be mailed back to her.

They are not thieves, but are terrible at customer service.

Buy these:

I always had to keep swiping Metrocards over and over. While made for RFID cards, once I stored them in these, I never had a problem since.

Usually, yes. Why?

You are very judgmental
Link?

which is why NOBODY on this list likes you.
Proff?

I will follow advice from others to ignore you - - as best as I can.
Which "others" gave you that advice? Are they intelligent or are they moronic? Do you even stop to consider that before you take someone's advice?

You add very little to the conversation - just how superior you think you are to others.
You quickly threw away $28.50 of your own money because you didn't stop for a few minutes to think about the situation rationally and you're talking about superiority? LOL!
