A massive construction drill bit pierced a tunnel serving the F train and sliced the top and side of an occupied car in Queens on Thursday — but no one was injured as a result of the terrifying blunder.

Roughly 800 passengers were aboard the F train at the time, transit officials said. The drill bit, being used as part of the MTA’s East Side Access project, made contact with the F train shortly after it left the 21st St. Station in Long Island City, triggering its emergency brakes to deploy at about 11:45 a.m., transit officials said.

The train’s operator then made the stunning discovery of what happened. The bit, measuring 10 inches in diameter, extended through the tunnel's roof and reached platform-level. The bit apparently skimmed the top of at least one subway car and continued along the exterior wall of the car, as photos obtained by the Daily News reveal. It did not cut into the subway car — but was very close to doing so.

A contractor working on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s East Side Access project was operating the drill above ground near the 21st St. Station. The contractor was supposed to be expanding a construction well, MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said.

“They were off the mark,” Ortiz said.
No one was injured, but it was an extremely close call, as the picture shows. New York Daily News No one was injured, but it was an extremely close call, as the picture shows.

The East Side Access project, one of the MTA’s ongoing mega-projects, will bring Long Island Rail Road trains into Grand Central Station.

Afterward, the MTA brought another train up behind the halted F train and riders were led through the relief train and into the 21st St. Station, which was just 700 feet from the scene of the penetration, officials said.

The MTA identified the contractor as Griffin Dewatering New England, Inc. A company representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

“Obviously this is under investigation, and we’ll take it from there,” Ortiz said when questioned about the possibility of punitive action.

At the risk of mentioning it, I have heard that was the situation with 76 St/Pitkin which is why there is so much mystery surrounding the existence of the station shell.

This is what I have been saying all along - - the MTA has a history of ignorace and malfesance. When I explain about a wrong sign or material error, they don't fix it. Now when someone reports and unsafe condition, they don't fix it either. I am sure they knew how many violations were assesed on the "Big Dig" of NYC project that it was only a miracle of G-d to have the drill narrowly miss the F train.

I think the MTA IG will be involved.

Speaking of the Big Dig, the contractor is supposedly from New England. They were apparently drilling a well (dewatering?).

More likely a monitoring well. As in well use to monitor the water table level in ground adjacent to an excavation or tunneling project.

Monitoring well adjacent to the tunnels between the Tysons Corner and Greensboro stations.

It is pretty obvious to me the drillers drilled in the wrong place, the location they were instructed to drill was wrong or they drilled deeper then they were instructed to drill.
