Chicago CTA Has Only 3 Series Now

TRICK or TREAT..... Effective Halloween, Oct. 31, 2014, following am rush, CTA 2400 series Boeing cars are removed from passenger service. CTA presently has only three series in service: 2600 Budd; 3200 Morrison-Knudsen; 5000 Bombardier.

This is how it happens...."Rail Maintenance General Bulletin SUBJECT: Removal of 2400-series rail cars from service Effective after the AM rush period on October 31st, 2014, all remaining 2400-series rail cars will be removed from service and should not be used for passenger service thereafter.
Bulletin RMGB 4-14 Effective: October 31, 2014

Supersedes: N/A"

That should be an acceptable number of rolling stock generations for a system of that size. It allows for about a forty year lifespan with new purchases every 12 years. IMHO they're hurrying the 7000 series cars and will end up with a block obsolescence problem when the 5000 and 7000 series cars come up for replacement. It's unfortunate they were so conservative with the 3200s, as they'd probably prefer to get rid of their DC motors in a relatively short timeframe. Of course if they went with an off-the-shelf Flexity or similar design they could save a lot of money over pretending they're a subway.

What will they do with the red-striped 2400's, used for winter purposes ? Transfer that functionality to 2600's, or keep them ?

The so-called "work motors" are going to be kept for work trains. Historically the 5- 50 PCC were kept in work service so you see the CTA is used to using cars in that manner.

The 2400 cars lasted a lot longer than the LRVs. They were built in the same plant at the same time. I guess the CTA got lucky unlike the T and Muni.

I think that part of the problems with the LRVs was the number of moving parts on some of the operating systems. I heard for example that the door operating mechanism had over 140 moving parts which seems to be almost a recipe for breakdowns. The LRV was suppose to be a standard American LRV much the same way that the PCC was the standard streamlined American streetcar. The PCC of course had much more success. The success of CTA’s Boeing cars was probably the result of greater CTA input in the design of the cars operating system than the individual transit properties had with the LRV. Since the 2400s were able to MU with the earlier 2000s and 2200s, it’s safe to assume that the 2400s were merely a Boeing body on the proven technology of the previous 2 car orders accounting for their better performance.

Also the 2400 were able to MU with 2600s and 3200s. Although they never M,Ued with 3200s. Presently, 2600s and 3200s are MUed on Orange line since 3200s are being rehabed.
