I think that part of the problems with the LRVs was the number of moving parts on some of the operating systems. I heard for example that the door operating mechanism had over 140 moving parts which seems to be almost a recipe for breakdowns. The LRV was suppose to be a standard American LRV much the same way that the PCC was the standard streamlined American streetcar. The PCC of course had much more success. The success of CTA’s Boeing cars was probably the result of greater CTA input in the design of the cars operating system than the individual transit properties had with the LRV. Since the 2400s were able to MU with the earlier 2000s and 2200s, it’s safe to assume that the 2400s were merely a Boeing body on the proven technology of the previous 2 car orders accounting for their better performance.
