Some details reveal on the MTA board meeting...

The Cranberry and Rutgers tunnels repairs for next year:
1. Weekend outage only
2. Only one single track outage to repair for each tunnel.
3. Subway service reroutes between West 4 St, Manhattan and Jay St, Brooklyn during one of the tunnel closures.
4. More details will come next year, the tunnels repair contracts is still on the procurement process till February 2015

Clark Street tunnel repairs for next year:
1. MTA is planning to closed the tunnel on the weekends. 2 track outage.
2. The tunnel repair contract is still on the procurement process till February 2015.
(Likely the 4 and 5 trains will replace the 2 and 3 trains in Brooklyn.)

The repairs are mainly replacing electrical equipments: new signals, tunnel lighting, pump rooms, communication and power cables, emergency alarm systems and some track repairs. It is noting like the Montague Tunnel repairs that has taken over a year to do major work.

Spring of next year will be interesting time.

Note: (L) train riders will also be impacted as well in the next year or two when MTA will have to shut down the tunnel and make some repairs. (pending on upgrading the CBTC equipment next year)

I was thinking that it’s highly likely that work on the other river tunnels will only have to be done one track at a time since the tubes are more isolated from each other than they were in the Montague St tube. As I have mentioned before, Montague was unique in that the Nassau Cut junction was actually under the East river itself and the way the connections were built, both tubes had to be shut down to effect repairs. There is more isolation between the N/B and S/B tubes of most of the other river tunnels so the necessary repair work can probably be done one tube at a time.

spell error...

It is nothing like the Montague Tunnel repairs that has taken over a year to do major work.

Some say problems in Queens cause the R to be a mess in Brooklyn, yet the R weekends over the Bridge worked fine. Maybe the route needs to be broken up: W and RJ.

I remember when they were doing work in the 14th st tubes years back, they did sort of a shuttle back and forth on the L train weekends. This was way back in the 90s. They only did one tube at a time as not to completely shut down the line there.

And unlike the tubes from Downtown, there isn't much of an alternate to the L. It is also as busy at night and on weekends as it is during the week. Hipsters don't have banker's hours.

I believe for some G.O.'s then that the MTA had a train that traveled back and forth between Eighth Avenue and Bedford Avenue, and another train traveled between Bedford Avenue and the last stop in Canarsie.

The problem is that one of the main justifications for Chrystie St was to eliminate one way lines that went from the outer boroughs to Manhattan loaded and returning empty. The idea was that trains going in both directions would be carrying full loads of passengers.

So we had QJ's running from Broad Street to Brighton Beach in the AM rush empty, and so on and so forth for other reverse peak/3 boro trains.
