What if I use a off-peak ten-trip ticket on a peak train? How does that work?

Then you pay step-up without paying the on-board surcharge...

Is the step up fee just the difference between the off peak and peak fare?

No. it is greater.

For example, Zone 1-10 step up is normally $5. Step up from a 10 trip is $7.

Is the step-up always on a whole dollar (to avoid complications with change)?

I believe so. The TVM price difference between 1-10 O and 1-10 P is 4.75

Thats how its done over on Metro North. I'll stick my neck out & say LIRR ticket pricing & policies are identical.

Yeah I've seen people on Columbus Day get on peak trains with off-peak tickets. The C/Rs expect it I suppose -- they even make announcements to be prepared to pay the step up, everyone carrying off-peak tickets. I suppose the nicer ones will announce it before the train leaves the terminal, if there is time.

I have actually done that on occasion. I'd rather not spend the cash, but it beats missing the train or paying the on-board surcharge for a brand-new peak ticket.

Not only that but 10 trip off-peak is discounted. LIRR has a 10 trip peak but there is no discount just the convenience of not having to buy individual tickets.

Correct, you have a ticket just not the right one so there is no on board penalty charge.

No, not really. I imagine, but have not 100% verified, that there are plenty of other "not the right tickets" you could have but still have to pay the on board penalty charge.

Like tickets for the wrong railroad?

I've always wondered, however, how they would react if you had, say, a Riverhead-to-Greenport ticket and you got on at Penn Station. Would the onboard surcharge apply?

No, like your second example, a ticket for the wrong trip. Does the LIRR have an "extension of journey" provision like MNCR?

Yes, but not the same policy. (Don't remember which one, but) one of them charges the difference of fare, and the other charges the one way fare from the station on the ticket to destination.
I asked this here in the past.

MNRR is different because of CT I think and the lower zone fares charge in CT.
Need to ask the resident expert.

Both railroads have the same policy - difference in fare if you have a single ride or round trip or peak 10 trip, one way fare between zones if you have a weekly/monthly pass.

10 trip off peak extensions are complicated, because they're discounted.

Step up fares is the difference between the peak fare and the fare you paid (off peak one way price, or 1/10 of 10 trip ticket)

ALL onboard purchases, except by senior/disabled passengers or those boarding at no-TVM stations, are rounded up to the nearest dollar.
