Posted by Larry,RedbirdR33 on Thu Oct 16 07:57:30 2014 Tuscarora Almanac - October 16, 1949 - The Book of First RunsThe first train of BMT Standards ran on the Astoria Line today in test service. The consist was (n) BX Unit 2450 - 4025 - 2451 and B-Type 2536 - 2535 - 2534 . This train arrived at Astoria at about 5 PM and then began operating as a single track shuttle using the northbound track until the Monday morning rush (10/17/49) when No 2 Fourth Avenue Locals began regular service to Astoria making this an all BMT operation. Larry,Thanks for the terrific info! I didn't know they remained for 6 years, but it is logical since the R16s arrived in 1955 together with the Staten Island rejects. I understand, too, that the R1s were put into service a month before, in September 1949, probably to test them out ahead of time. |

Looking out the front window pulling into Vernon-Jackson, thats where you get the feeling of an ear popping ascent as the traction motors bog down significantly. |

The Manny B does have the steepest grades, but only near the portals - approx 5.5%. The second steepest is the Williamsburg Bridge leaving Essex St - approx 5.4%. The 60th St and Steinway tunnels are next with approx 4.5% grades, but over much longer distances. |

Briann Cudahy wrote something in Under the Sts. of New York about BX's being banned from one of the bridgss, don't remember which one - but sometimes being included in a trainset anyway.- Also, I thought I'd remembered reading that D-types were supposed to be kept off of the Eastern Division due to their weight, but then I think I read that they were used there from time to time. Sorry about the "thinks" and "thoughts" - I don't have any of my books within reach, and, you read stuff and as time goes on there are theres more details to store in the brain cells, and inevitably, some of them drift out of ready reach. |

I don't see why the Ds would be banned from the Eastern except for the portion of the Jamaica Line over Fulton St (which has since been strengthened) since except for certain lines like Fulton which couldn't even hold ABs the els were built to dual contract standards> As i have mentioned in other posts, even Myrtle could hold them if the el had been able to be modified for 10 ft wide cars. The Ds in West End Lcl service did travel over the Bway Bkln structure to get to DO Yd for midday layups. |

Here's a corrected list I found on NYC Transit Forums:tracks J1 and J2 on the willy b from station 73+45 to station 77+35 (390 ft) is at 5.5% thats the steepest track H2 on the manny b from station 287+35 to station 278+07 (928 ft) is at 5.4% grade. steinway tubes from station 88+94 to station 101+99 (1305 ft) is at 4.5% grade 60th street tubes from station 102+12 to station 109=97 (787 ft) is at 4.37% grade NYC TRANSIT TRACK LOCATIONS WITH GRADES LARGER THAN 4.0%: • Manhattan Bridge (Brooklyn and Manhattan approaches), Manhattan Bridge and Brighton/6th Avenue Lines • Williamsburg Bridge: Manhattan approach, Jamaica Line • Steinway Tunnel, Flushing Line • 5th Avenue to Grand Central, Flushing Line • S/O 36th St. to the 5th Ave. Cut Portal, West End Line (Open cut portion of West End Line) • 38th St. Yard Viaduct Ramps West End Line (Open cut portion of West End Line) • 60th St. Tunnel, Astoria and 11th St. Cut Lines (connection to Queens Blvd. Lines) • South of Queensboro Plaza Upper Level to Astoria Line • South of Broad St. Jamaica /Nassau Cut Line (to the Montague Street BMT Tunnel to Downtown Brooklyn) • East N.Y. Yard Lead Jamaica Line • North of Eastern Parkway/Broadway Junction Jamaica Line • South of Chambers St. to North of Broadway-Nassau/Fulton St., 8th Avenue Line • Grant Ave. to 80-Hudson St. Liberty Ave. Line • North of South Ferry Loop, 7th Avenue Line (Westside IRT 1 train) It appears the Willy B has the steepest grades, but only over a distance of 390 feet. The Manny B's grade is slightly less, but over a much greater distance so that may be why BX cars were banned from the MB but not the WB. |
