Do you want to buy an 1935 R6 978 SUBWAY CAR, YOU CAN ON EBAY |
|
Posted by Union Tpke on Wed Oct 15 08:57:50 2014 http://www.ebay.com/itm/331344201409/$24,000 I think all the members on subchat should pool up money on ebay to buy it! Buyer responsible for vehicle pick-up or shipping |Shipping quote available Item location: Brooklyn, New York, United States Ships to: United States Payments: Deposit of US $2,000.00 within 48 hours of auction close Full payment is required within 14 days of auction close Original 1935 R6 NYC Subway Car One Of Only 7 Remaining R6's! This is a rare, once in a lifetime, opportunity to own a major piece of New York City history. For your consideration is an original and authentic 1935 R6 New York City Subway Car. Built in 1935 by the American Car and Foundry Company under contract for the City of New York. This train was contracted for use on the IND line. In the mid 1960's, it was moved to the BMT line, before finally being taken out of service in 1975. There were a total of 500 R6's built for the New York City subway system in 1935 and 1936, this being one of only 7 remaining examples, and one of only two that are privately owned. One end of this R6 had previously been sheared off, to facilitate it being affixed to an existing structure. In other words, one end is "open". Many of the original interior details remain, including the original seats (re-upholstered sometime in the 1980's), ceiling fans and hand straps. The undercarriage had been stripped off in the late 1970's and the entire car now sits on a thin concrete slab. Whether as a restoration product, a retail display centerpiece, or a conversion to be utilized in a restaurant setting, the possibilities are endless. Due to it's current location, it proved difficult for me to get the types of photos I would have liked. Seriously interested parties are encouraged to come and view this piece of history for themselves before bidding. The R6 is currently stored in a private yard in Brooklyn, New York. This listing does not offer any sort of shipping or freight and is considered as "Local Pick Up Only". This R6 is being sold "As Is, Where Is", meaning that all costs and logistics of flatbedding and transporting this train will be at the sole expense of the successful bidder. I had this R6 moved to its current location several years ago, and can tell you that it can indeed be loaded onto a lowboy flatbed for transport. I can possibly arrange to get an estimate for loading and transport to your location upon request. For further information, or any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me via the eBay message system Car '''978''' was converted into a deli (Golden's Deli) at the [[Staten Island Mall]], until the Deli was closed in January of 2012. The owners of the Deli have placed it in storage, but have ultimately decided to sell the car.http://www.ebay.com/...344201409 |

The real value to museums would have been the undercar stuff. Seats and such, not so much. |

It really should be: "Would you like to buy the top 3/4's of a real subway car" I wonder how much money he would get for scraping it. Maybe you should donate the parts to one of the museums NYTM, Shoreline, Kingston, etc., let them remove the parts they need, he gets a tax write-off, and the remains of the car then goes to scrap. |

Actually according to the Daily News, it is currently in my neighborhood, on a flatbed, he can place it on my front lawn. Thre only use I can see for it is as a parts donor, as the front was cut off by the 3rd set of doors. Even at $2400 it would not be a good bargain, unless someone would build it into A store or restaurant. |

Always had two fantasies about buying an R-9. No kind of serious money for either one, but it's nice to dream.1. When I lived with my family in a split level, first enclose the open porch and make it into a real room, then put the R-9 in the backyard, (no trucks, mounted on some kind of reinforced pilings), attaching it to the room that was formerly a porch, you could enter and leave through the storm door. Inside, leave half of it as is, in the other half, remove the seats, put in a desk a couple of chairs and a bookcase, with hanging plants in the windows, and blinds, making it into a kind of study. Leave both motormans' cabs intact. 2. This one would take serious, serious, money, and a lot of buildding permits and/ or greased palms. Build a seventy or eighty feet long IND station mockup in your backyard. Get excavating machinery to dig a trench 25 or so feet wide, then pour concrete to make walls, a trackbed and platform, install track, ties, etc. Install IND style pillars along the platform, then lower the R-9 onto the tracks (can also be on pilings w/o trucks - just have a trackbed to make it look real). Then cover it over, tile the walls, make a name tablets either from a real IND station or your home street & house number. Find an artist who can paint each endwall as a tunnel entrance, with lights, signals etc. Install benches, and a mini fare control area, and make it accessible by a door from your basement. Have friends over, tell them you want to show them the subway in your basement. "Sure," they'll say, thinking you're either kidding, or lost your marbles. Take them downstairs through the ordinary basement, then open the small unassuming door, next to the washing machine perhaps, and voila, take them into your subway station. It would blow their minds. Something like that would be great place for parties. And be sure to make the handles in the motorman's cab workable, and when used by partygoers (under the influence or not), a tape of R-9 sounds will begin, piped in through a number of speakers throughout the car. And when there's no parties, it can be a place to hunker down in, when you get cabin fever upstairs in the house. |

Our friend Heypaul had many visit his arnine shrine. Bingbong and I sat in that cab too and enjoyed every moment of that plus extended Heypaul time just the three of us. It is still genuinely one of the high points of visiting the city. He's a really cool personality, a genuine mensch. And we REALLY love his style too. We had a great time exploring the doom of Coney Island and things only Heypaul (and we) could appreciate for giggles. As to personal arnines, many have done it. There's a car that was abandoned in Jacksonville that is now coming to life in the Carolinas that was just what you described (aside from the building permits for a huge hole. Many other railcars that escaped the scrapper did similar to what you describe. Arnines are hard to find, but there's plenty of others still available. It isnt' the price of the car that's a killer, it's MOVING it. :( |

I know this is off topic, but what material did you play? Doc & Merle Watson etc., originals? Did you listen much to Clarence White? He was on a couple of later Byrds albums, and was with "The Country Gentleman" - they did at least one album for a small label. Sadly he was killed by a drunken driver, while unloading equipment at a gig. |
