Storage Wars

Did anyone catch tonight's episode of Storage wars ?

Locker bidder Ivy Calvin bid on a locker and won. So he goes through the items, appraising what they are worth and lo and behold, comes across a box of tokens.

But that's not all. To my surprise, he's holding a side roll sign box from an R-11 !

He's cranking it and one of the routes states "4th Ave - Bridge". This really was an R-11 sign box as you can tell by the crank handles are art deco, unlike the crank handles on the R 10-15 boxes.

So he take it to an expert to tell him what it is and what it is worth. Lo and behold, he goes to the Orange Empire Trolley Museum. He's walking to the barn and you see the back of some PCC's. A staff member of the museum looks at the tokens and inspects the sign box, telling Ivy that the sign box was from a bus and the bus driver would turn the crank for the prioper route. LOL !

In the end the box of tokens and sign box are apparised at $ 1,400.00. This epsidoe should re-air next week.

When I saw the sign box, I was floored ! And an R-11 sign box as to boot.

That segment appears near the end of the episode, which should give you some time to make some microwave popcorn .

1I saw the episode last night. I knew the box was probably from an R-10 or 11, since it had B division markings.

Some expert, didn't know it was from a subway and how can he give a value on the tokens without looking at each one. Perhaps the value of the tokens have gone up due to their metal content and not due to the collectibility

Also no mention if there was any provenance with the box. I have a sign box roll sign inside from an R-15 Turn the sign to one end and the date of printing is shown as 1947. Also on one of the outside ends there is notation in yellow "#1 End 5950".

The giveaway was the crank handle. Only the R-11's had that style handle. Also the worn paint was the aqua blue paint the R-11's received when under contract R-34 were rehabbed.

I like to know how that box made it to the west coast !

They actually contacted me (thru my website) about doing that appraisal but I couldn't fly across the country. A bus sign? Really?

probably the same way my R1/9 boxes did. Bought at the concession store in the Museum in 1976, shipped by my brother in law via USPS.

That's what amuses me about people in the moving pictures on a little screen business. Never occurred to them that they could just send some pictures and get a proper answer?

I've done quite a few television appearances, even for the major networks over these last few years. I live in a remote area in upstate New York. All we've had to do to put my mug on their air was for me to toss an iPhone onto a tripod, let them ask the questions, mic myself and send them the MOV file by upload to edit into their package.

Unless they actually needed you to hold the thing in your hands, that would suffice. Or lacking something that can record where you are in 1080p for editing, they could have just invited you downtown to their facilities and shipped the shots out from there.

Back in the old days before broadcast quality gear made it to the consumer level, you'd just head down to the local TV station and it would go up on the satellite. Having to jet back and forth is kind of a thing of the past unless of course you're working with idiots.

So congrats ... you're definitely considered an actual expert if they were willing to burn through some cash to get you out there. Above all else, TV producers these days are notoriously cheap. Especially when they work for the Hearst/Disney syndicate. :)

Yep, the episode should re-air next Tuesday about 9:00PM on the east coast.

It should be near the end.
