Posted by chuchubob on Thu Sep 11 18:54:35 2014 NS K38 came in to Conrail's Pavonia Yard in Camden with a clean CP AC4400CW third.   Cove Road, Pennsauken: Conrail SP18: Camden to South Philly  and WPCA20: local to lower Burlington County  SP18 left one minute after CA20 arrived.       Bakken crude oil train NS 64W had some color.

The two BNSF engines came in with an oil train that originated in North Dakota on BNSF. It's more efficient to keep the engines on the train than to swap when NS gets the train. The NS engine had to be added because of cab signals on the NS line between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.The CP engine came to NS on a train that interchanged from CP to NS and NS chose to keep the engine for a while. This is routine, and the railroads keep track (pun intended) of who owes whom via horsepower hours. When one railroad owes another more than they are comfortable with, they send their worst engines to the other railroad to repay the horsepower hours. |

Hey, that was an interesting brief about engine carry overs and hours owed.Something I would never have considered. I thought mixed power was caused by rentals. I always wondered how railroads kept track of freight cars. |
