A worker was injured during a construction accident on the Upper East Side Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. at East 83rd Street and Second Avenue, where Second Avenue subway construction is under way.

The worker apparently fell from street level about 100 feet down into a hole.

He reportedly suffered a leg injury, and other workers in the tunnel were able to come to his aid.

A crane was brought to the surface while workers harnessed the victim, who was then lifted back up through the hole back to street level.

There, he was loaded onto a backboard and into a waiting ambulance, which rushed him to the to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The extent of his injury is unknown, but the man was conscious when he was lifted from the hole.

This is one lucky guy!
When he fully recovers, he should pack his bags and head for Las Vegas.

As usual, the rush to have the story on-line first meant some facts were garbled.

- Worker was ALREADY 100 feet underground (likely working) before accident
- pipe fell on him, it broke his leg
- he's strapped to medic-evac basket
- hoisted up & out of glory hole to waiting ambulance.

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/08/20/worker-at-2nd-avenue-subway-site-hoisted-to-safety-after-suffering-injury-underground/

quite a bit less sensational story, but he's alive.

That does make more sense. Falling 100 feet and only sustaining a broken leg would be superhuman.

Not only that but CBS news initially reported that it was an MTA worker that was injured when in all likelihood the individual was an employee of the contractor and not the MTA.
