It's not that unusual, unfortunately. It's common for the result of a merger to begin eliminating duplicate unprofitable services. Happens all the time in business. Not to mention that it was probably govt regulation that kept it going as long as it did. |

The federal government didn't string the wire, the PRR did. It's the wire that made the NEC a superior choice to the Reading main for service between PHL and NYC. What their financial health was in 1969 is not being argued. We know the Reading was driven under because the regulation to preserve affordable fares deprived it of revenue. |

The Crusader had not yet been named and was only known as the new "Stainless Steel Streamlined Train"; there was a contest in progress to give the train a name, for which the prize was $250 in 1937 dollars ($4,129.38 in 2014 dollars). Back then, you could ride this train from NY to Philly for $1.80 ($29.73 in 2014 dollars; current combined NJT/SEPTA fare is $24.90 OW). |
