It's not that unusual, unfortunately. It's common for the result of a merger to begin eliminating duplicate unprofitable services. Happens all the time in business. Not to mention that it was probably govt regulation that kept it going as long as it did.

Proff? Railroads were trying to ditch passenger service since the war ended, and due to regulation, it took years for them to succeed in ditching it.

Yes, we know the PRR passed to government control. By the 1960s the PRR was in no better shape than the Reading. Both suffered at the hand of "affordable" regulated fares.

The federal government didn't string the wire, the PRR did. It's the wire that made the NEC a superior choice to the Reading main for service between PHL and NYC. What their financial health was in 1969 is not being argued. We know the Reading was driven under because the regulation to preserve affordable fares deprived it of revenue.

That's hardly what killed it. If it had proven to be a viable service earlier on it might well have been saved. But your bogus "affordability" argument (and the idiots in government who fell for it at the time) killed the Crusader. All SEPTA and NJT did was put it out of its misery.

Another one posted by Martin Zak. The Crusader had not yet been named and was only known as the new "Stainless Steel Streamlined Train"; there was a contest in progress to give the train a name, for which the prize was $250 in 1937 dollars ($4,129.38 in 2014 dollars). Back then, you could ride this train from NY to Philly for $1.80 ($29.73 in 2014 dollars; current combined NJT/SEPTA fare is $24.90 OW).

It is, I agree. Someone on FB was guessing the location to be Fanwood from the signal tower. The OP of the pic had lost a lot of info with respect to the photos due to a house flood, apparently.

Note that the lettering was still not on the locos in 1938.
