ALCO PA-1 |
|
Posted by Karl B on Mon Jul 28 20:49:08 2014 Back in the mid 1960's the D & H RR bought 4 used PA-1's from the ATSF to use on their run from Albany to Montreal. In less than two weeks the D & H personnel at Colonie Shops refurbished, repainted and relettered ATSF 59, 60, 62, & 66 into D & H 16, 17, 18, & 19. They were put in service on the Laurentian. The new paint scheme was almost as attractive as the original ATSF warbonnet. To D & H fans the new scheme was probably more attractive. A fifth unit was purchased as a parts source to keep the other four running. It was supposed to be a NH engine. Is there any chance that anyone might know the number on that NH engine? |

And as to Alco, well ... live near Schenectady and so there's plenty of retired folks around here who once worked for Alco. They love to tell stories about how fast piston rings failed in their diesels - Alco made fabulous steamers but never quite got diesels down. :) |

In the decade after the u boats arrived, Alco's entire market share went to GE (EMD held steady circa 89%). Entertaining factoid, there are a few hundred old EMDs running around on rebuilt 567s and 645s which can be renewed almost indefinitely it seems. Rebuilt GEs? very few, when done they get scrapped. |
