ALCO PA-1

Back in the mid 1960's the D & H RR bought 4 used PA-1's from the ATSF to use on their run from Albany to Montreal.

In less than two weeks the D & H personnel at Colonie Shops refurbished, repainted and relettered ATSF 59, 60, 62, & 66 into D & H 16, 17, 18, & 19. They were put in service on the Laurentian.

The new paint scheme was almost as attractive as the original ATSF warbonnet. To D & H fans the new scheme was probably more attractive.

A fifth unit was purchased as a parts source to keep the other four running. It was supposed to be a NH engine.

Is there any chance that anyone might know the number on that NH engine?

Went looking, turned up nothing other than Alco #18 doing what Alcos always did best. :)

And no, it's not on fire, it's just running. Heh.

Even on a steam engine it's hard to make that much smoke!

Back to the original question, the D&H's Historical Society says NH 0783 was the parts engine.

Ah cool! Karl will be happy. And as to Alco, well ... live near Schenectady and so there's plenty of retired folks around here who once worked for Alco. They love to tell stories about how fast piston rings failed in their diesels - Alco made fabulous steamers but never quite got diesels down. :)

Try this, what should be on NYMT's 244 cutaway engine but Alco's ill fated air cooled turbo charger (Fall 2010 "Headend" newsletter).

In case you didn't know, in 1967 the new president of the D&H was Frederic "Buck" Dumaine, formerly president of the New Haven.

As I've learned over the years, Alco sure knew how to build steamers and their steel stayed together. But their motors? Sheesh. :)

another way to look at it is that the early GE u boats and predecessor "Black Maria" test beds were mostly the same GE parts as in the Alcos (they originally co-marketed) but with a very different Cooper Bessemer diesel. In the decade after the u boats arrived, Alco's entire market share went to GE (EMD held steady circa 89%). Entertaining factoid, there are a few hundred old EMDs running around on rebuilt 567s and 645s which can be renewed almost indefinitely it seems. Rebuilt GEs? very few, when done they get scrapped.
