PHOTOS QUICKIE: SILVER LINE DAY ! |
|
Posted by Jersey Mike on Sun Jul 27 03:10:22 2014 Had a pretty exciting outing for the Grand Opening of the Three Billion Dollar WMATA Silver Line. I'll eventually get all the photos and videos posted, but for now here are a few sneak peaks. Here the first outbound Silver Line train arrives with 5162 in the lead at the east Falls Church station. The inbound VIP train was delayed so what would have been the first and second westbound SL trains were short turned as Orange Line trains instead. I actually rode on the last Orange Line train out of Large Towne Centre. Metro #5162 again at the new Wiehle – Reston East Station. My impression of the line was that it could have been faster and a lot of money was wasted on pointless interlockings that were clearly there to pad out the contract. Metro was handing out some schwag in the parking lots of the Wiehle – Reston East Station as well as others. The attendant was nice enough to let me out of fare control to pick up this cool Silver Line pennant and a Silver Line Smart Trip card. I was unable to score a Silver Line t-shirt or bottle of Silver Line bottled water. |

As a retired transit professional who was a train operator for 33 years, I want to arrive at my destination on time. The more interlockings you can utilize to get your passengers to their destinations on time, the better. |

And the more money a transit system costs to build and operate the less transit is built. Try getting to your destination when the line is stuck on the study treadmill.Go back and look at how transit / trolley lines were built back in the day. They had very few interlockings because the private companies building the lines knew how to contain costs. |

There are some gaffs in the NYCT system that could/ should have been addressed with more switches back in the day. Those thought occur to me every time I get stalled on one of our "rapid" transit trains. |

There are some gaffs in the NYCT system that could/ should have been addressed with more switches back in the day. Those thought occur to me every time I get stalled on one of our "rapid" transit trains.I can name a few interlockings which NYCT could have constructed: North of Broadway-Lafayette station, southbound side (diamond crossover) - if a B or D train has to be rerouted south of 59th Street, that's it - - can only get on the F Culver line in Brooklyn. 7th Ave/BMT Brighton Fordham Road/IRT New Utrecht Ave/BMT Sea Beach (north of the tunnel). A full diamond crossover on both sides north of the Pacific Street side of Atlantic Ave/Barclays Center so trains skipping DeKalb Ave can run local between Atlantic and 36th Streets. Gun Hill Road/5 14th Street Union Square/Broadway BMT south of 125th Street/Broadway/IRT North of Jamaica Center, E upper level only (like 205th Street on the D). In doing so, it provides better operations by providing more service from JC than the 12-13 TPH it can handle with. |

Though planned more carefully than the IRT or BMT, even the IND has such flaws, one of the biggest being no way to switch from the downtown express to the local track from 59 St to Canal St, on the original 8 Av line.I was once on a downtown D at 59 St (express track, of course) that had to be re-routed down 8 Av because of a stalled B train at 7 Av. The poor conductor announced that we would be making "A" stops to W4 St, then D stops thereafter, but I knew we would do no such thing. Sure enough, we had to go via the A to Jay St, and then via the F to Coney Island, not at all the D route. |

They also are an additional hazard (switch points are relatively easily to derail on) and require additional maintenance. That said, I believe that the "extra" interlockings between Wiehle and Spring Hill are part of a provision for a future station at Wolf Trap. |

You misunderestimate the distances between some of the silver line stations.Whiele to Spring Hill is a good 6 miles. There was an obvious spot between these two stations to add a needed station, "Wolf Trap", but that station wasn't built because of lack of funding. |

There's basically nothing there except this:Wolf Trap ...which doesn't generate enough consistent, day-in-and-day-out demand to justify a station. |

The plan was only to build the provision for a station at Wolf Trap at this point, not the actual station.I believe a skeleton station would have been suitable there, just staircases and ramps (no escalators and elevators) for access and only open for events at the Filene Center. The placement of the interlockings on the Silver Line is to ensure that there is an interlocking every x miles, I'm not sure what value WMATA is using for x these days. |
