There are some gaffs in the NYCT system that could/ should have been addressed with more switches back in the day. Those thought occur to me every time I get stalled on one of our "rapid" transit trains.

I can name a few interlockings which NYCT could have constructed:

North of Broadway-Lafayette station, southbound side (diamond crossover) - if a B or D train has to be rerouted south of 59th Street, that's it - - can only get on the F Culver line in Brooklyn.

7th Ave/BMT Brighton

Fordham Road/IRT

New Utrecht Ave/BMT Sea Beach (north of the tunnel).

A full diamond crossover on both sides north of the Pacific Street side of Atlantic Ave/Barclays Center so trains skipping DeKalb Ave can run local between Atlantic and 36th Streets.

Gun Hill Road/5

14th Street Union Square/Broadway BMT

south of 125th Street/Broadway/IRT

North of Jamaica Center, E upper level only (like 205th Street on the D). In doing so, it provides better operations by providing more service from JC than the 12-13 TPH it can handle with.
