Posted by Bill West on Thu Aug 7 04:09:13 2014, in response to Re: NH EP-4's under construction, posted by Jersey Mike on Wed Aug 6 07:39:12 2014. The development of the diesel eliminated Cleveland Union Terminals' electrification. The reassignment of those electrics to GCT justified increasing the weight capacity of the Park Avenue viaduct. This happened just in time to allow GE to design the EP-5 with all the equipment weight on only the 6 drivers. That allowed using C-C trucks from diesels instead of big cast frames. At the same time the Ignitrons allowed using diesel DC traction motors. Much cost saving from the common parts. All per a contemporary IEEE paper. Sounds like the butterfly effect doesn't it. Actually there had to have been an improvement in the ability to design, balance and stabilize the chassis for speed. The pony truck+driver DD1 was created because PRR testing continued the points NYC S motors and NH EP-1's had made about symmetrical unit designs being bad for nosing. L5's, P5's and GG1's just continued that conclusion, diesel E units and the EP-5 finally countered it. Maybe it was the E unit's Blomberg truck showing that double equalization was worth the complication that did the trick. Bill |

The development of the diesel eliminated Cleveland Union Terminals' electrificationProbably not. Like just about all anti-railroad technology (and this is one to a degree), there was government intervention. |

Thanks for the description Bill! When the EP4 was built in '38 the prevailing wisdom was that the locomotive needed an unpowered lead truck to "steer" the unit thru a curve at high speed like a steam engine. The A1A truck (2 traction motors on the outer axles with an unpowered center axle) was still an unproven concept at the time, considering the EMD EA was only on the road for a few months at this point & the carriers were still not sold on the concept. |
