Thanks for the description Bill!When the EP4 was built in '38 the prevailing wisdom was that the locomotive needed an unpowered lead truck to "steer" the unit thru a curve at high speed like a steam engine. The A1A truck (2 traction motors on the outer axles with an unpowered center axle) was still an unproven concept at the time, considering the EMD EA was only on the road for a few months at this point & the carriers were still not sold on the concept. |
