The MTA also will restore weekend service on the West Hempstead branch of the Long Island Rail Road, which was cut in 2010, during the recession.

The LIRR also will boost service on the Montauk branch in the fall: Some trains that only run during the summer will continue after Labor Day, officials said.

That is good news. Too far to drive from West Hemp to Merrilon ave or New HP if you live in West Hempstead.

Also,
Lynbrook has expensive private parking under the trestle,
RVC is Zone 7
NICE does not honor LIRR tickets

Drive to Valley Stream. You can park at that metered lot at the west end of the station for free on the weekends...

True, but the shitty 2 hour headways and the shuttle service to Valley Stream will always make the line less attractive than nearby alternatives. Here's a wacky idea: run hourly weekend service to Atlantic Terminal, and run the Hempstead or Far Rock lines into NYP.

After ESA, that is the plan.

There is NO excuse why they can't run the shuttle every 90 minutes alternately connecting with FR and LB trains. That would not be bad service.

They would save a little electricity and wear if they ran 4 cars, leave 2 behind in WH. But they are now paranoid of gapping. They ran mostly 4 car M-1's until the M-3's came, and nothing ever happened. I commuted on that line for 13 years back then.

A lot of J and M neighborhoods have regentrified, so could probably use more service to lower Manhattan without transfers.

Think about the M rider head to lower Manhattan. They have to transfer at both Essex and Chambers.

ESA will never open. Just my suspicion. The cost is already over what the current estimate for Amtrak Gateway is, and it was supposed to have been open in 2009 last year (current estimate is "between 2019 and 2023" for crying out loud).

Not to mention it is useful to have in case a train derails over a switch that knocks tracks a number of the limited tracks connected to Flatbush Avenue out of service. I remember one derailment when trains from Brooklyn were ARRIVING on Track 3 and the train from Penn Station was on Track 2 (or may have been Track 4)

I think that's a ridiculous plan. The whole point of ESA is to INCREASE flexibility.

This plan could eventually make the FBA branch into another version of the Lower Montauk- orphaned all the way to abandonment.

a) They don't want to run thru-service
b) They want to thru-put Manhattan trains as fast as possible without being bothering maintaining unused switch point, to say nothing of Brooklyn train stying things up

No, the point is to increase service to Manhattan without transfers. Where did you read "flexibility" in their proposals ?

" his plan could eventually make the FBA branch into another version of the Lower Montauk- orphaned all the way to abandonment. "

Lower Montauk had 2 trains a day, were not shuttles, but were Oyster Bay trains. No analogy at all

Atlantic service will run every 10 - 15 minutes like rapid transit

Are Brooklyn trains tying things up now? I'm just saying it's another terminal for extra service, and it's a useful terminal for reroutes. If something happens on the main line, they're going to dump everybody on Jamaica for the shuttle?

I still think it's incredibly short-sighted to be doing this, even without Brooklyn becoming the destination that it is.

These are the same people who ordered just enough diesel locomotives and cars for then-existing service, then got caught flatfooted when the ridership increased.

A Brooklyn bound train off the main line, especially the Hempstead branch, is a pain in the ass for the dispatchers. It has to cross paths, either west of the Jamaica platforms, or east of it, to proceed, and of course everything running thru track 4 & 5 headed to Manhattan. Somebody or another gets delayed 2 minutes.

Far Rockaway and Long Beach come up out of the hole from the Atlantic. Less impact, since they are farther south. West Hempstead takes the Montauk is also a pain, but there are only 3 of them going to Brooklyn in the AM rush.
